Just watched some Ski Mountaineering at the Winter Olympics. Epic Fail!

I thought they'd be skinning up some steep slopes, then strapping skis to their back, getting out ropes and crampons, climbing a cliff face and then skiing down.

All they do is skin up a bit, skis off and climb some steps, skin up a bit more then skins off and ski down. All done in three minutes. Where's the mountaineering in that

I'm in a bit of a state of disbelief following a phone conversation I've just had with a locum from the surgery. I called this morning due to problems I'm experiencing with an increase in dosage of one of my medications. The doctor was a nice young guy (34 - he told me?) but came across as pretty clueless in dealing with my issue.

He repeated several times "I'll be guided by you on this" as he made repeated failed attempts to grasp the problem. Long call, and long story short, I asked for his best advice on weaning back down to my previous dosage. After reading about the drug he agreed with my suggestion that I take 75% of the higher dose starting tonight then back to my usual by next week.

At various points during the conversation I did something I've never done when speaking to a doctor. I told him I thought he was wrong. He's never met me and yet suggested starting me on a very potent anti arrhythmic drug, well known for bad side effects. He seemed really surprised when I refused this offer.

He then asked what my consultant cardiologist and endocrinologist recommended at my last meetings and again seemed stunned when I reported that I hadn't been seen by any specialist for years. I told him that I gained most of my health updates through online patient forums, particularly in the case of the Graves' disease where the NHS seems to have very little understanding.

It wasn't an unpleasant conversation and I'm actually pleased I got the opportunity to get some points across to someone in the profession young enough to perhaps make a difference at some stage, but the whole thing is actually quite frightening. I think he almost laughed when I told him the follow-up to my latest heart procedure was a telephone call.😁

I got a bit of a fright when we discussed ageing and he said I had four or five years to go. He then explained that he meant that's when doctors consider someone to be old.😂🤣

^ Terrible, but not surprising really. When I had my knee op on 05 Dec last year I was told I would be contacted by someone locally regarding starting physio - to start 2 weeks after the surgery and then every few weeks after that. Nobody contacted me. When I had the staples out at my GP surgery I asked what was going to happen and it transpires that physio here is self-referral. So I filled out an online form and highlighted the urgency of starting physio. 2 weeks later I got an appointment through for 27 February. A whole 12 weeks later and tbh it's probably a waste of time now. I had no choice but to pay for private physio sessions. I will go this Friday but I'll be interested to see what they say about all this.

Sadly recognizable. I have probably seen 10 different 'doctors' for my foot - and they all have an opinion, learned or not.

Talking about age, when my mum was in hospital a few weeks ago doctor that came to see her (in the middle of the night) looked like a next door neighbourhood girl - 13 years old. I kid you not.

I need to do some deep dive investigation but it might be that I am getting older, not that they are getting younger. I'll Sherlock my way out of that conundrum soon.

I am sorry to read this.
I am also sorry that post Covid, I have become a grumpy shit because the standard of service, level of competence, amount of care that every company and sector exhibits is an absolute disgrace.  No one gives a shit anymore and I can't wait to retire and recede from other humanoids.

Retirement is good. I don't miss work at all and I can only imagine how much worse the working environment I came from must be now. With regards to the way service has dropped off a cliff, I think the working from home situation is not recognised enough as a major contributory factor. Dealing with government deportments or major institutions is now the stuff of nightmares, and on the rare occasion when things go well I am genuinely staggered. I hope your retirement is not too far off.

Alas, for reasons to boring too divulge here, I won't ever be able to retire.  The best I can hope for is a reduction of responsibility and stress.

This seems to be the way garages make money from fixing cars nowadays. Engines and larger components are generally much more reliable now and require less tinkering but electronics like reversing sensors, fuel or charging flap mechanisms and the like seem to constantly require fixing. Keep in mind the WD40 tip for dodgy sensors.
