Elvis

Baz Luhrmann's sprawling biopic which was nominated for eight awards at the 2023 Oscars.

Luhrmann's eye-popping, frenetic style is all present, correct and as engaging to watch as ever, and Austin Butler is perfectly cast in the title role.  Tom Hanks as the manipulative "Colonel" divided critics, but I thought he was as reliably good as he is in most things.

So it's all impressively crafted, the many musical sequences all hit the mark and it rattles through its two-and-a-half hours at pace.

And yet - given I'm only a more distant, casual fan of Elvis, I couldn't 'love' this film, though I admired it greatly; fans should add a star to the rating.

Rating: ***

Apex https://www.imdb.com/title/tt16431404/ Charlize Theron is hunted through the Australian wilderness by a psycho Taron Egerton. Some of it is ridiculous, but it can be edge-of-seat stuff at times. Egerton's Aussie accent seems perfect to me and he plays the menacing baddie very well. A decent, not overlong flick and of course Charlize Theron. 7/10

Season 2 of Beef. Nothing at all like the first season and it's a bit weird at times despite the relatively simple story. Acting was good though, I just don't think the writers really knew what they were trying to achieve. 6/10

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come A decent sequel that starts as the first one ends. It's more of the same really but not as good or as impactful as the original. Still, some of the action sequences are pretty neat and the cast is great. 7/10

Season 2 of Citadel on Prime, which slipped in under the radar. No advertising that we saw.

That'll keep us going until the feature length Jack Ryan later this month  :D

Seen the Citadel 2, like with all these series they keep on getting worse. What was a nice idea for one show (6 ep?) does not work moving onto a next series.

It almost feels like these added seasons are the new movie sequels: they hardly, if ever, work unless you set it up like that from the get go.

Just started The Buroughs https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27557289/ Made by the Duffer bothers and it's like Stranger Things set in a retirement village. Pretty good so far. Alfred Molina and Geena Davies (70yo and looking good) star.

Finished Citadel series 2. Best thing about it was Stanley Tucci, oh and nice to see Matt Berry get some screen time. Rest of it fairly meh.

Jack Ryan: Ghost War

On Prime. Whilst not up to the standard of the series, it was an ok watch, with plenty of ridiculous action.

Jack Ryan peaked (to me) with the awesome season 3.

We were entertained by it, although it has all the 'BBC' boxes ticked!
