Lame.. American sentimental shit.. not sure where the reviewers were getting their out loud laughs from.. and the character  of Coleman Domingo's husband was the most irritating cunt ever..

Fountain of Youth - This should have been great - all the ingredients were there: a good cast, lots of action, a decent director, a tried and tested story type, international landmarks. Yes, it all seemed it was going to be a hit. Alas it's really not. It lacks any charm at all, the characters just constantly bitch with each other, the script is dire and it's as shallow as a puddle. Are there any positives? Not really, I couldn't recommend this mess at all. I mentioned the director - actually Guy Ritchie. How can someone who has made a film like 'Lock, Stock...' come up with this drivel? I can forgive a movie if it at least shows some heart - this had nothing, not one part of it you could say was impressive or decent. A horrid movie that probably cost millions to make. Oh yeah, Stanley Tucci is list in the cast too. He must have had 30 seconds of airtime and was probably relieved to get his cheque for doing almost nothing - I mean what was the point, it wasn't even a cameo. Avoid - 2/10 (and that's for the chase scene at the beginning).

Finished se02 of The Last of Us. I didn't like the start of this series but got a lot better at the end. Another cliff hangar ending though. 8/10 for this season 9/10 for season 1.

Finished off Handmaid's Tale.. bit of a yawn fest that finale.. how many times can you watch Elizabeth Moss looking pissed off walking in slo mo towards the camera..

Terrifier 3

First, apologies for the relatively lengthy review.

You've got to have some admiration for writer/director/practical effects specialist Damien Leone creating what has become a hugely profitable franchise from very modest funding and that has become so prominent in a very crowded genre.

Terrifier 3 has become the highest-grossing "Unrated" film of all time - and "highest-grossing" can be taken to mean more than just "most revenue", given its success is largely down to its extreme gore and horror that challenges even the strongest of stomachs and tolerance for outrage.

This continues a narrative hanging over from the first sequel, though of course the hokum that is the story isn't really the point; the point is daring you to either guiltily laugh at the exceptionally graphic and bloody human carnage, or to be repulsed to the point of not bearing to watch, or to do both simultaneously.  Perhaps the most challenging element of all is that Art The Clown doesn't discriminate by age, though mercifully the few scenes that do involve very young child victims are portrayed either off-screen or through suggestion.

Leone is acutely aware of whereabouts the lines are drawn between upsetting, sadistic nastiness and the blackest of mischievous humour; there's a very deliberate and unsettling (im)balance of these elements throughout, albeit with varying degrees of success.

This is scuzzy grindhouse horror with mainstream production values that knows its cult audience - but is best watched from a safe distance.

Midnight Movie Club:

Heretic

Hugh Grant has come a long, long way since his disarming English Gentleman schtick in romcoms of a previous generation; recent years have seen him have something of a renaissance, whether appearing in minor but highly remunerated roles in the likes of Wonka, or brilliantly playing against his old type in grittier fare like The Gentlemen and, from last year, this suspenseful psychological horror.

Two young Mormon missionaries (played by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East, both hugely impressive themselves) respond to Grant's invitation to talk about their faith.  What follows for the first half of the film's 111 minutes is a trip down a rabbit hole of superbly taut suspense, where every micro detail is deeply significant and serves to ramp up the tension - it's absolutely riveting.

However, as the plot resolves in the second half the film loses a fair bit of its edge, with more traditional horror tropes coming in to play.

But overall it's a very admirable attempt at an intellectual and thought-provoking take on the genre and with its outstanding performances is well worth seeing.
