Updated my spreadsheet with the 2026 times. The sun sets here at 16:17:21 this afternoon, 27 minutes later than the earliest on 13th Dec. We're getting the afternoon daylight back at about 1 min 34 secs per day at the moment.

Annoyingly a year ago today the sun set at 16:17:44, 23 seconds earlier than this afternoon.

Light until nearly 5:00pm tonight

This chart shows "sunset speed"; the number of minutes per day at which the sunset is receding (here in NW Leics but I think should be very similar throughout much of the UK).

Today's sunset is 1 min, 46 seconds later than yesterday's. The maximum daily sunset difference is 7th Feb (1 min, 56 seconds later than 6th Feb).

From today until early June.

By 5th March, we'll have two hours back. A bit less than five weeks' time.

Didn't know this before but the sun only rises exactly in the East and sets exactly to the West on 2 days, September 21st and March 21st.

It's on a constant pendulum and on June 21st it rises in the North East and sets in the North West

On December 21st it rises in South East and sets in the South West never touching the northern side of the sky

It covers much more of the sky and goes much higher in the sky in the Summer. On December 21st it sticks to the Southern horizon climbing much less than in the summer

Slim

As of today, we have two hours of afternoon daylight back here in NW Leics.
