Here in NW Leicestershire, today is the day when we've got "more than average" afternoon daylight over the year. The average time between midday and sunset, over the whole year, is 6 hrs and 14 minutes. Today it's more than 6 hrs and 15 minutes.

Come to think of it this only works if you think of midday as 1200 GMT all year round.  So if you take BST into account, we're still hard done by.

Because of refraction you can still see the sun after it sets and of course you see it before it rises.

I think the spring forward at the end of March spoils thing a bit in terms of the gradual progression away from Winter. It's like a warp drive into Summer

We're gaining afternoon daylight at a rate of 1 min, 45 secs a day here in NW Leics at the moment. About 9 seconds per day slower than three months ago. Sunset at 8:29 BST here this evening.

So we hit the longest day .. sunset here at 22.05.. it's not until the 29th of June we lose our first minute at 22:04
