I've done well with pre-owned vinyl this week. First result was a copy of Chris Rea's 'Dancing With Strangers'. A wonderful purchase, this one. Probably unplayed in a minty sleeve complete with picture liner. Survived the post with absolutely no damage whatsoever. This sounds tremendous, excellently recorded and produced.

Secondly, a copy of Earth, Wind & Fire's funk/soul masterpiece, 'All 'n All'. Not quite as good, the gatefold sleeve looked all of its 50ish years of age with moderate creasing and some shelf wear (I'm usually happy with not so good sleeves as long as the vinyl is good). I didn't hold out much hope for the contents tbh but the vinyl looked shiny and virtually unmarked. Side one played really well, nice and quiet. However, side too had a little noise at the start and an annoying two-revolution scratch on the first track. I had read somewhere about resolving scratch issues using a cocktail stick/ toothpick. Not having any such things in the house, I decided to sharpen a wooden match with a box cutter and give it a go.

I could see the offending section quite easily so I passed the sharpened end over the section a couple of times and could feel it removing the deflected vinyl. I passed a brush over it and put it back on the turntable. Well, whaddya know...it worked! Two very intrusive pops, gone! Both sides now worthy of the near mint grading.

 Securing decent copies of two albums I've been looking at for a while for around £26 (Discogs) is what I  consider as a win. Chuffed to bits!

Alice in Chains - S/T, for years an unobtainable LP unless you were prepared to drop 1,000 USD. They finally re-issued it.

Joel Ross - Gospel Music. Ross, a phenomenal vibraphone player with  such a lush sounding, and comforting album. Love it.

Had a lovely hour and a quarter crate-digging at Riverman Records in Oxford today. Last time there I ran out of time and had to skip the jazz section.

I started with it today but the only records that appealed to me were three 'classics'. As it happens, all new, sealed and a reasonable £12 each. I've probably only listened to them a couple of times and couldn't make up my mind what to go for out of Herbie Hancock's 'Takin' Off', Coletrane's 'Blue Train' and 'Ah-um' by Charlie Mingus.

I put that to one side and looked through the rock section where I found a really nice copy of 'Hoople' by (of course) Mott the Hoople. I have 'Mott' and I think this can be considered a companion piece. I couldn't resist at £12 and it includes 'Golden Age Of Rock 'n' Roll' and big hit 'Roll Away The Stone'.

(I'll give the three jazz records a few more listens on Qobuz to see which I prefer and then begin to expand my jazz catalogue)

Out of the three the Trane is a classic, a must have for any jazz listener.

Mingus I have a soft spot for but it's a bit quirky. Very musical though, Mingus was a visionary.

Herbie's debut is fantastic in more than one way. It opens with the great Watermelon Man, later re recorded with Headhunters. But look at the trumpet and sax players: Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon, 2 of the biggest names and all around fantastic players.

Neil Young - Live Rust (Neil Young Archives, Original Release Series (2017))

Been looking for a copy for a while and this release is purported to be one of the best. Got a sealed copy from a seller on Discogs for £38. Sounds great so far - extremely quiet and the acoustic numbers on side one are sounding clear and detailed.
