An A320, as operated by TUI, Jet2 and similar holiday-themed airlines consumes roughly 0.025 litres per km, per passenger.

But a typical large cruise ship as operated by P&O and others uses about 0.05 litres per km, per passenger.

On top of that, the fuel used by a cruise ship (heavy fuel oil) produces a bit more CO2 per litre, and a lot more pollution (particulates etc).

Interestingly a typical family car is similar in fuel efficiency, with three occupants, to a fully loaded A320. About 0.023 litres per km per occupant.

A cruise ship is in a different category from a car or plane though; it's not just transport. It has bars, theatres, a gym, restaurants and swimming pools.

I suppose you could argue though that the family car might be being used for a more worthwhile purpose. Work, appointments etc. Depends how important holidays are in the grand scheme of things. Is there a zero missing from the car figure, or am I just not following the arithmetic correctly?

Most western governments are so in thrall to the eco-zealots that they believe that the consensus among them is enough to be able to dismiss common sense, blinded as they are by their pompous, virtue-signalling ignorance of the technical issues.

I'd say this is not down to eco zealots, more the fact that we are consuming more and more electricity - from whatever source - and nobody stops to think as to whether the system can actually provide it.

I'd have to disagree there. The urgent need to upgrade the infrastructure is mostly due to the transient and unregulated nature of energy provided to the system by renewables.
I would think that domestic power consumption has decreased over the last few decades due to more efficient appliances, lighting and heating systems. Of course, that's not to say that population growth will obviously be a factor.
