There's a lot to unpack in that one. How much of the solar infrastructure has these Chinese management systems on them? What would it take to override them? (probably not hard at all, they are in essence simple devices). Are the servers really in China? What level of control does the management software have anyway?

From a technical perspective - actually having a control function hosted offsite, in another continent no less is a really questionable design feature and I'm inclined to suspect that it's just software updates, possibly performance reports and so on that are hosted abroad. Might be possible for diagnostics to be run from China, or through their servers. But full-on control, including on/off? I just have a feeling that a technology-illiterate journalist has done the 2+2 thing and come up with 5.
