After Cape Verde now also Curacao making history, first point they won. The goalie, born in Nijmegen and played in the Netherlands for the better part of his career, had 15 (!) saves denying Ecuador scoring a goal.

Neither of these teams will make it to the next round although I kind of wish Curacao did. The away kit is beautiful, classic and they canonly wear it in away games, and all of their games are home games..

Although on the face of it a 0-0 draw between Ecuador and Curacao looks like it was a dull game between two unfancied sides, it was actually a cracking game of football played at a frantic pace, and while Ecuador dominated, Curacao certainly didn't park the bus and always looked like they might nick something.

Really enjoying this World Cup.

We've derived plenty of unexpected amusement from the linguistic gymnastics that broadcasters have indulged in over the pronouncing of Cape Verde.

Such are the sensitivities nowadays around the desire to avoid offending those from far-away nations we've had: "Cape Verdy" (which has been the recognised way of pronouncing Cape Verde for as long as I can remember), "Cape Verd" and "Cap Verdy".

Hilarious (BBC-instigated) woke nonsense.

Cabo Verde, as in Ca-Bo Vèr-de (2 syllable pronunciation it has always been for me. The Portuguese way.

We have the largest population of the islands people in Rotterdam in the world, I work with some.
Never been an issue in pronunciation here, nor a change.

Ghana did an excellent job of keeping out England tonight. You have to give credit where it's due. England came close but just could not unlock the Ghanaian defence.

England were very, very lucky not to concede a penalty in the late stages. Could so easily have been a 1-0 defeat.

Yes, they played the ugly game well. We should end up on seven points anyway, but it's down to the last game.

By the way, I think the only reason Gordon wasn't taken off at half time was that Tuchel couldn't reach deep enough into Seneya's back pocket.
