England need 27 runs to win the Test, India need 3 wickets to stop them. Exciting!

Slim

LBW overturned. Drama. 19 needed now, or two wickets

Slim

Getting silly now. Chris Woakes has turned up with an arm in a sling to bat left-handed. Looks like the Indians have got this.

Slim

Oh my Lordy Lord we've got a 6, and now need 11 to win.

Oh dear god this is supposed to be a game, the poor bugger has a dislocated shoulder and he's hurting himself.

I thought: finally! Someone is going to explain me this mystical, mythical age old sport.
Alas, more smoke and mirrors arose from the afore mentioned posts. Oh well, guess I'll stick to football and cycling.

Shame England couldn't quite get over the line. Great match though.

Totally understand your feelings, Nop. I wouldn't mind a quick tutorial on some of the mysteries. Declaring? What's that? I know AI and Google would assist but I think I'd prefer to spend a day with someone knowledgeable at a match and enjoy a few beers or cups of tea, whichever is more acceptable.

Perhaps we could persuade our own @Nickslikk2112 to answer a few questions. I know he's an aficionado.

Declaring, to the best of my knowledge, is where one side decides they have an insurmountable enough lead already and calls it a day to give the other side their go at batting.

think the logic to this is that there's a risk that if you continue, the other side won't finish their innings until time's up, in which case it's a draw.

Dang. England snatched defeat from the jaws of victory several times in that Test :(

Explaining Cricket to Foreigners:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side thats been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out.

When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

I now fully comprehend all ins and outs  :o

Declaring seems very polite. Very English. Give the other chaps a chance.
