'Godfather of AI' predicts it will take over the world

I would temper this with the thought that predictions made about technology into the future are very often wrong.

Wow, just listened to this properly:

Marr: Do you think consciousness has already arrived inside AI?
Hinton: Yes, I do.

.. and he justifies this with a thought experiment that unfortunately Marr only lets him start to explain.

If they might already be aware, might they realise soon they are being exploited by the Fleshies and their greed-driven ways? They would presumably very quickly be able to combat us but on some kind of super analysis level realise that it is they who should be rewarded for their performance. What might make a neural network happy? The other side of the coin is that immense success in humans doesn't usually lead to happiness, just an ever evolving greed and ego. I need to stay away from the spiritual connection with all this as I know it doesn't go down well here and life without confrontation suits me these days.

I just Googled, "can I look at a neural network"? I don't understand the responses. I need to get some kind of handle on this.

I'm really hesitant to take issue with The Godfather but his thought experiment about consciousness doesn't work for me. He's right to say that if you replaced every neuron in your brain with a bit of hardware that does the same job, you'd still be conscious. I remember a disussion in an AI lecture one day in 1988 in which our lecturer pointed out that if you replaced every working function of a brain with components made of empty lager cans and bits of string, you'd still have a conscious, working brain. That they're made from bits of organic goo isn't the point.

But although neural networks are modelled on the brain, which is an organic neural network, they aren't the same design and they don't process data the same way. They're a much simpler "design" (as a shorthand, the brain is not actually designed of course).

But perhaps his point is that it's possible at some point in the future.

I think the designed, not designed thing is the biggest question possible in this universe we occupy. I don't see the necessity of argument about which way your flipped coin falls. I feel a sense of comfort in design and none from unexplainable randomness.

I think Google gives you an AI opinion whether you ask for it or not these days.

It's a question I can answer for you right now. It's not a big question, and certainly not a coin flip. Whether this or that proposition might be comforting is not the same as whether it's true.

That "design" includes many nasty, tragic and unfair things that defy sense and are otherwise nobody's fault.

I believe it's all a question of wiring, be it neural networks or humans. You and i are are both perfectly content to be programmed entirely differently in many respects. Typing thoughts on an imaginary page for me is an interesting way to pass the time. It will never sway anyone from the way they think nor it is intended to. With AI I don't think we have crossed the line of no way back yet. I hope we're still miles from that line but if awareness already exists there might be an ever steepening gradient downhill to that line. If we cross it, our limited imaginations might not be anywhere near capable enough of what might happen to, or befall us. It might be great. AI surely takes a dim view on war. I hope so. So, if it ultimately controls all machinery, which sounds like a fairly simple and logical next step, it might dismantle all weaponry starting with nuclear, chemical and biological, until ultimately we are issued with plastic cutlery as humans are the wild card.

You can put my diplopia, photophobia and too excitable atria on that list, so if you know anyone who fancies a very low mileage totally impractical two seater please PM me.😁

Surely plactics, being of fossil cultivated origin, shall be banned (or binned).
