This was not unexpected - he'd been suffering from emphysema for some time after decades of chain smoking (which he said he never regretted) - but, still, he was probably my favourite director of all and this news has really saddened me.

He was a unique, bona fide genius in my opinion.  He leaves behind a remarkable body of work in film, music, photography, painting and sculpture, but of course it will always be his filmmaking for which he'll be mostly remembered - and his is a filmography like no other.

R.I.P.

Ah yes, I remember seeing Blue Velvet at age 16 at the movie theatre, it left quite the impression.
And I must have watched Lost Highway 10 times and still didn't figure what it was about, but loved it. Need to re-watch it.

RIP indeed, Twin Peaks was legendary.

Ah, sad news indeed. He's probably my favourite director too. I often think of his movies, they've had that much impact on me. Rabbits is one of the oddest, scariest, weird, mind-bending piece of film/tv I've ever seen. Certainly a genius and will be greatly missed. RIP.

Yes, he put sequences of Rabbits into the 3-hour mind-melt that was Inland Empire - where they were so incongruous, they fit perfectly of course. :)
