Someone posted this pic of their bike on another forum. The pedals look like animal traps, I hate to think what they'd do to an unprotected leg.

In 1973 I came off a bike and came off worse in a fight with the serrated edge of an ordinary steel pedal, quite a bit less aggressive than these ones. I very well remember sitting there, having a look at my tendons through the bloody gap that had appeared just below my left knee and wondering why it didn't hurt (it definitely did a few minutes later).

Eight stitches and a tetanus shot followed. Still the only time I've been injected in the bum (feel free to make up your own jokes here). I still have the scar (from the pedal, not the needle).
