Do you wear a watch regularly?

I was very tempted to get one of those when they came out - the white dial one especially. - but the price puts me off a bit, it's a lot for a 5.

That said, the Kranz does have the more modern automatic movement (the 4R36) which has hacking and handwinding, the older 5s like this one I bought on a whim in Chelmsford five years ago don't have that. This one cost me £75 in a sale.

The older 5s tend to be inaccurate as well, I regulated this one myself.

The thing I don't like about 5s is the day-date feature - a date window puts me off a watch a bit, and day date is even worse! But not enough to deter me from buying one usually.

So, yesterday I'd reserved the last 'Gene Kranz' close enough to consider trying one on. Beaverbrooks in Oxford city centre had a dark face version on display and put it to one side for me to try today.

I'd also arranged to take my Omega into the Oxford branch of Goldsmiths as they are an authorised dealer that can arrange a service with Omega (kill two birds with one stone, so to speak). The minimum service charge is £625( ) and I've been putting it off for a while. The watch is now twenty years old and has yet to be serviced. It doesn't get out often and is in great condition. It's auto so needs to be wound and set every time I use it. I've consider an automatic winder but not got around to getting one.

Anyway, I went to Goldsmiths first to drop the Omega off but was told that, on inspection, a service was really not required! A technician checked the movement for accuracy and it was still in spec and the condition of the watch was excellent. It was nice to receive some honest advice from them (I'm not sure how much the dealer makes on an authorised service). I was pleased to say the least. We discussed getting it serviced in a few years time. I was also advised to wear it more often and that an auto-winder does the watch no favours. So, I skipped out of Goldsmiths with the 'feeling' that I was at least £600 better off!  . Next stop, Beaverbrooks to check out the Seiko.

I tried the watch on and it looked great! They were asking £400 and I thought I could get it a bit cheaper. I checked online a couple of days ago and it was available online for £360. I also used a historical price checker (I shouldn't have as I discovered that on December 26th Ernest Jones had the watch priced at £250!). At present there is no retailer (online or otherwise) that has the watch for less than £400. Of course, it has to be remembered that it is a limited edition piece.

I discussed the price with the sales assistant (manager?), Zara, and she was initially a bit cold to the idea of any sort of discount. After a while she asked my thoughts and I replied, "it's a bit too dear at £400". That softened her up a bit and asked, "what are you thinking?". I said, "£380?". She replied, "Yes, I think we can do that". Considering they were offering a three-year guarantee and could alter the bracelet there and then (a £20 job if bought online), I was happy.

With the watch properly fitted, it feels super comfortable. A good morning!

I don't like it myself. But it's a statement, a talking point. Definitely unique. It is fascinating, undoubtedly. I'd feel like I was wearing a biohazard.

It's not certain whether the flies would have suffered. We can accept using pesticides for food, but harmful, vomit-inducing vegetable dyes for art?

I was watching some show on tv and the main character wore a black, simple looking watch.
A while later I was on YouTube and saw a review video for a Citizen Eco Drive watch.

The penny still didn't drop until I mentioned to the wife I saw a nice Black Watch I liked.

"You have one".

Long story short, In looked in the bottom drawer of my night stand and sure enough, there it was. Nice watch as well. Has a solar cell, only needs a bit of sunlight every now and then and it'll run just fine. Very accurate.

Also found my grandfather's watch. Need to polish it a bit. Compared to modern watches it is really tiny though!

Nice! I like those. I have quite a few solar watches - just leave them on a windowsill not in direct sunlight (north facing is ideal) and they'll go forever.

I only have two Citizens, both Eco-Drives, one's a chronograph that I never wear and the other's a two-hander that makes a nice holiday watch. May take a pic tomorrow.

I asked Gemini to help me identify my grandfather watch, it's a Pontiac Memodate, with a vintage stretchstrap. It's looking, ehm, well used. Lot's of scratches on the glass (which is not glass). I'll try and polish it over the weekend, and unmount the strap to clean that as well.

Metal polish works very well on acrylic crystals. Just have to be careful not to get it down the side.

If it's worth anything, you might want to think about whether to polish it. It may reduce the value.

This is my Citizen two-hander. It's great for going on holidays with timezone changes, because I'm OCD about getting the minute hand to hit the minute markers at the exact moment the second hand hits the 12, and it can take a while to set that up.

No second hand - no problem!

This one came with a black leather strap, I've put it on a fabric strap that suits it quite well.

Digital watches also avoid that problem, of course. But I always take five or six watches on holiday.

Based on the images uploaded by customers on the site, it looks like an $80 Chinese watch. But if you're dumb enough to vote for Trump, you're dumb enough to fork out $499 for one of those.
