When I was about 14 I played basketball. I wasn't very good, I am only 1.73 mtrs tall, so I was destined to be a guard, but wanted to be a forward. I played with friends but because the club needed an extra guy in the higher age category, they assigned me to that. This meant I no longer played with my friends.
My coach was a guy maybe 18 and he liked the right music. Maiden, Saxon, Scorpions that kind of music. We talked, and because I was younger I really looked up to him. So one day he invited me over to his house and he had a pretty decent record collection. He rummaged through the LPs and came up with 4 of them that he handed to me.
"Here, I buy the most recommended ones, but sometimes I just don't like them". I took them home and played them, 1 was awful for sure, it was Rox and the album was Violent Breed. The guy couldnt' carry a tune but I did not have a lot of LPs so I wanted to hold on to all of them. The second one was Hellanbach's Now Hear This! So now were in business, this was fast faced, and sounded energized.
And then I had 2 albums by the same band. I recall my coach' favourite band was Scorpions and he had a fondness for Michael Schenker, well don't we all? Much to my surprise Schenker was on one of these albums he discarded stating he just didn't like the band.
I played No Place to Run and No Heavy Pettin' back to back endlessly and couldn't figure out what was not to like. I guess I was right.

This was a very ling winded way to say I am now playing No Place to Run.

Listened again and my impression is very good.
So, first off: it is a remix, not a remaster and that is a big difference. It means Wilson had the freedom to alter levels from initial recordings. Which he has done, ever so slightly.
There is deeper bass, Glover and Paice's low end has improved. Not just turned up (like with a remaster) but you can hear he has worked on the separate tracks. That means it is not a muddy bass end but a much more controlled sound. However, it's not jumping out at you and it gets better the more you push the gain. This is what good mixes do: they do not tire and they do not distort when you turn them up.
It is very noticeable in The Mule. It is crisp, fresh and you almost feel the bassdrum pumping from your speaker, sometimes hardly audible at the end of the drumsolo but I bet if you'd be able to turn it up to a ridiculous level the neighbours teacups would dance out of the cabinet.

Wilson also has a tendency of making mixes sound flat withouth making them dull or lifeless. I have heard quite some of his mixing work from the 70s classics (Tull, Yes, KC) and they share that same quality. It helps greatly with what I already wrote: it does not tire the ears, as oppose to remasters that just had the faders pushed up.

As far as straying too much from the original sound: I am not worried about that. Especially since DP has had any number of people already remix other recordings. Glover himself has done extensive mixing on the classics, I heard the Come Taste the Band Kevin Shirley remix (which is great for car rides but otherwishes squashes all nuance out of it) so DP fans should be aware of the 'different sounds of Deep Purple' already. And yes, it does sound different than the original, that was the whole idea, no? But if you, like me, already appreciated this recording for it's atmosphere, you won't be disappointed. It sounds more as if the mics were on the stage (which they were..duh!) but it's almost as if the room ambiance has been made a bit smaller. I generally like things with big soundstages (equipment and recordings alike) but this creates a sort of initmacy that I hadn't realised was possible with this album. It's as if you are closer to the stage, it's hard to describe. It is very clean.

You probably understand I like it a lot, and it's essentially an alternate mix. No one is forced to listen to it, or buy it. You can leave it, never hear it or take the plunge. But if you do, I'd recommend more than a casual listen. You might hear things you never heard before..
