New PC, more recent operating system so I thought I'd have a go at setting up a proper DAW. Previously for recording over backing tracks I've used Audacity, which works OK for simple overdubs. But I've installed Ardour now, which has a lot more features.

My PC's CPU is poky enough that I can set the buffer size down to 64 samples, which means that I get a delay of only 1.3 milliseconds - so I can monitor the guitar part through the software rather than straight out of the effects unit - thereby listening to it "in place" with the backing.

Ardour takes a bit of getting used to. I tried it a couple of years ago on my last PC but the audio subsystem was less mature then and involved convoluted audio plumbing away from the application. That's all gone away now.
