The trouble with the  last three albums was they were all too long.. cut them all down to 8 songs then they would have been half decent OMO.. and the closing track on CA The Garden was just awful twee AOR tosh.. a dismal end to the album

Surely Hold Your Fire .. those last two tracks are stinkers.

Yeah their closing tracks were always a bit hit n miss..

So starting at 2112 for arguments sake

Cygnus.. plod fest
LVS.. spot on
Natural Science .. spot on
Vital Signs.. acceptable.. bit of a pointer in the direction they were going
Countdown.. rubbish
Btwheels.. spot on
Mystic Rhythms.. rubbish
High Water.. mm not sure
Available light.. pretty good
Bet your life.. I like it.. I like the jangly guitar
Everyday glory .. it's ok
Carve away the stone..yep acceptable

Seen the interview now. The geek-o-meter peaks well over 10, which I like. He really is a fan, and a great engineer and producer. He's one of the more modern guys, I have heard plenty of his productions to say that, but in a way that is also true to the older recordings. He wants to bring forward what the bands' strenghts' are, not what he wants necessarily. But like most modern day producers, his productions sound pretty 'thick' and compressed. Sounds great on the radio, and in the studio. Not always so great on a nice stereo though, there's not a lot of room to breathe. Having said that, CA sounds fantastic.

I think you're description of his characteristic production is also present on CA - compressed and lacking in dynamics. And that's my opinion when played on a nice stereo.
