I streamed the hi-res version of ESL and was surprised by the audio quality. I think it's widely recognised that on release, the production was a let down, even the band were critical (not at the time though  ). I was listening to the 2009 remastered version and it does sound clearer than I remember (usual caveats apply, of course). Enjoyable but still a flawed exercise in other important areas IMHO.

The new Yellow Eyes album was released out of nowhere this morning: Confusion Gate
The band plays their own style of black metal, dissonant, interspersed with lovely melodies. But always rough sounding, with no intention to make any compromises. New York band, somehow you hear that. This is not the 'foresty - we go back to nature' type of BM, this is gritty, as a shadow that overcasts the cities' alleys and explores the 'self-side' of life.

Of course, I love it. What's not to like? It has the rawness of Wolves in the Throne Room (US black metal of the foresty type) and the awkwardness of Blut Aus Nord (French black metal that sounds like a fever dream). But it's little rougher to listen to. Intense
