Tried an English whisky while on holiday called Cotswolds Single Malt.

Similar to Highland Park or the Macallan, not my favourite sort of whisky but pleasant. Good to know that, when the time comes that you need a passport to cross the hard border north of Berwick, we won't be dependent on imports for a wee dram.

My stepdaughter very kindly brought a bottle of Jura round for my birthday today. I would never buy a 70cl bottle of Scotch for myself now, simply because I am unable to discipline myself to drink it at a sensible rate.

It's very nice though, I must say.

It's this one. As you can see I was good last night and only had a couple. I've been known to hoover up an entire 70cl bottle over two nights, although not for quite a few years now.

Had dinner at a bistro pub a few miles away this evening. Nice. Instead of dessert, I thought I'd have a Scotch. I asked the young waitress if they had any Glenlivet. "I'll go and find out!" she says, very helpfully.

About four minutes later she returns and says "the only Scotch whisky we've got is Jamesons".

I thought this was highly unlikely, not least because Jamesons isn't a Scotch whisky. So I wandered round to the bar to have a look for myself. They had about six different single malts, including two varieties of Laphroaig and Talisker. But no Glenlivet. I settled on the Macallan. I've tried it before (I think it was the bog standard 12YO) and didn't much like it. Found it a bit nondescript. But it was alright. I wasn't quite in the mood for an Islay or similar.

This one caught my eye at Tesco - at £20 (with a Club Card) which is not a lot for a bottle of whisky these days I thought worth a punt.

It is, in effect, if you'll forgive a contradiction in terms, a Welsh Scotch. Certainly a Welsh single malt, anyway. I was pleased to find that it's very nice - a bit like a Speyside. There's no indication of this on the label but it tastes like it's been finished in sherry casks. No indication of the time it's spent in the barrel. Maybe quite young as it lacks a certain depth.

The wife had a go although she's not a whisky fan, and she discerned a hint of dark chocolate in the flavour. It's also a bit fruity and a bit toffee-ish (like a Glenlivet for example). Has a nice bite but smooth. Me likey.

I somehow made this last 10 days, quite proud of myself. Just having the last of it now. There wasn't quite enough for a glass so I topped it up with 12YO Glenfiddich. A blended British, if you will. Quite nice.

This distillery is only about four or five miles from where I live. I read about it recently as I was considering it as a gift for someone in Yorkshire. Wikipedia was a bit confused as to the source of the water used in the process. One paragraph suggested the source was Loch Cochno with the cooling supply coming from Loch Katrine (which supplies much of Glasgow). However this was reversed later in the page. 

I'm not much of a whisky enthusiast but a few years ago the Lismore bar in Partick (where my family hails from) had it as their malt of the month so we bought a round. It was quite pleasant and sweet I seem to remember.

I had a major panic during lockdown when Tesco delivered a bottle of Smirnoff with the security tag attached. This was a devastating blow at that time as I was alone, ill, couldn't read or watch TV or use a tablet due to the condition. Tesco were brilliant though, one phone call and a young lady popped round quickly afterwards with a replacement. I still wonder if I might have risked consuming broken glass if she hadn't turned up.
