Site Outage This Afternoon

Apologies if you attempted to access the site this afternoon between 3pm and 3:20pm UK time. After doing a server update and a snapshot, I attempted to upgrade the forum software. This caused the site to fail due to a mismatch between the MySQL database version and the forum version.

To be honest, this happened because I didn't plan it properly and tried to wing it. Just like being at work again!

I've restored from the snapshot and we're still on the old software version. I will research the proper method to upgrade the forum software and retry it some time in the following week.

One good thing is that the backout strategy (ie restoring from a snapshot) works very well, and it's quick so I'm glad to have tested that.

There's nothing much exciting in the new version of the forum software, it's just bug fixes and one or two admin feature tweaks. I don't think you'll notice a difference.

Unless I break it again of course.

Actually, the site was out but it looked like even I could do updates, because that is what it looked like. It seemed like it wanted to guide through an upgrade process.

Could be me though, being the noob I am.

The new site files, once unarchived into the web space, included an install / upgrade script and the site will default to displaying this if present. But the bigger (and subsequent) problem was that I upgraded the site files without upgrading the database tables to match.
