They've just announced what is apparently their only U.K. gig next year, on Saturday 1st August at Halifax Piece Hall, which is the best outdoor venue in the country. :)

Had a lovely afternoon yesterday at the New Theatre, Oxford. Not a gig in the purest sense of the word but 'Sunny Afternoon' is a musical production based on the iconic British band, The Kinks.
A really good show featuring a very talented cast. Most were musicians, with all the music produced on-stage. A decent telling of the rise and fall of the band, majoring on Ray Davies's fragile relationship with fame and his tempestuous relationship with brother, Dave. All the classics in there including the two Ray Davies songs made famous by The Pretenders, 'I Go To Sleep' and 'Stop Your Sobbing'.
For this matinee performance we had good seats in the circle (which cost just £15 each) and the sound was very good. Music was loud only when it needed to be and all the dialogue could be heard clearly. I'd give the production a solid 8.5/10.
The afternoon was topped off with some lovely ale in one of our favourites just across the road from the theatre, The Grapes, followed by some nice Korean food at Yori. A smashing outing all round!
Went to see Duran, the UK's foremost Duran Duran tribute band, at the Vic Biker's Bar in Coalville on Saturday night. Only a five minute drive so since the keyboard player is a friend, rude not to.
I and the other twenty-one people present (I counted) had a great time. They really are very good. Saw them at the Castle Inn at Donington last year and the place was packed out that time.

IMHO, Duran Duran were the best of
that bunch. Solid pop/rock. They didn't seem to take it all too seriously and, I think, they put the frilly shirts and make-up on to get the birds.
Planet Earth and Girls On Film were great singles, followed by others that were superior to many that came out of that genre.

Mamas Gun at the Hare and Hounds, Birmingham, last night.
This is the sixth or seventh time I've seen them now, great time as usual. Odd band in a way in that they often overlook their best and most well known material in a live setting but there was plenty of good stuff in the set last night.
Their usual bass player Cameron Dawson is off doing something else until May so bottom-end duties were handled by a gentleman called Arto Boyadjian. He really was very good, his proper jazz comping for Dave's piano solo was superb. Also plays six-string guitar in a tribute band called the Dutch Eagles apparently.
This was my third Hare & Hounds gig, I still don't really like the place as a music venue but the pub downstairs is nice. Had a chat with Mamas Gun singer / songwriter / occasional guitar player Andy Platts at the bar.

Serious question. I worry about volume at gigs now. On the infrequent occasion I watch a band I wear Alpine earplugs. Do you protect your hearing at all?
After R30, which was just stupid, volume wise, I had some professional ones custom made for my ears. They worked really well for a long time but eventually...just stopped working as they had done previously. I occasionally wear expanding foam plugs, but not that often. I do think the volume has been decreased a little at gigs over the last decade - but have recently been thinking I do need to invest in another pair...

I have been wearing earplugs since the early days of me playing drums, and I use them at every gig I go to. These are custom made ones of course.
It helps me in the sense that it kept my hearing loss at a minimum (I like my music so I want to enjoy it as long as I can) and has the pleasant side effect that it really relieves the 'morning after fatigue' I experience after going out.

A smallish crowd (compared to the size of the venue) but very enthusiastic and vocal.
Great gig from the whole band. Anneke still has the voice of an angel.

Jealous, never got to see Voivod (yet). One of my favourite bands, this year round doing festivals in the outskirts on my country (today even, just checked), that's a no go for me. Reminds me: I need to do a decent write up of Symphonique and sing the praise.

Really enjoyed BEAT played the music of 80s King Crimson Last night. Even better when they dug out 70s King Crimson - Red - in the Encore [Old KC Good, New KC ___ (fill in the blank ;)]
Can't believe Tony Levin is 80, saw a picture on his Facebook page today of him in 1962 playing Double Bass with the Boston Youth Orchestra for JFK.
Steve Vai didn't over shredify and Danny Carey was solid on drums.
Had Mel Collins sitting about six rows in front of me, Bill Bruford was also spotted in attendance, as were Jakko Jakszyk, Al Murray and Steven Wilson.
Also nice to catch up with Ali - sometime of these parts - who seemed to know half of those in attendance.
Got the Musical Box tonight in Glasgow.. And then there was Phil show.. setlist looks pretty tasty
