Just had a look through YouTube to see if I could find a few Rush covers .. there are loads of tribute band style covers like this one but nobody really wants to bring their own thing to a Rush song, breathe a different life into it.
Actually about 15 years ago I remember someone did a cover of one of the Moving Pictures tunes, I forget which one. It was really nice, simple, stripped down, elegant. Soulful. But she got lambasted in the comments.
I genuinely think that a lot of Rush fans, probably more than the fans of most bands, don't really get music. They love the flashy, sometimes overplayed drums. They like the bass lines because they sound complicated and conspicuous. They wet themselves over time signatures composed of two random prime numbers. They get off on the cleverness, the difficulty of the instrumentation. But they miss the wood for The Trees. The real joy of music just goes over their heads.

If it deviates too much from the original it usually gets a thumbs down. For this crowd there is the Tribute circuit that play songs note for note. Anyone else just go see a cover band that does their own version.
I myself like interpretations a lot. I have the original, I don't need 2 of those.

I liked the Mike Masse covers I heard a while back. Afterimage was excellent as a piano based song. I Googled 6 string fretted electric violins. Not cheap. Yes, I like someone else's take on a Rush song. It really emphasises the quality of their writing and melodies. Geddy used to come up with some great tunes and shoehorned in sometimes difficult groups of words from Neil quite perfectly. He seemed to lose that knack later on.

It isn't the full-on juggernaut wall of sound that Rush's version is, but that is kind of the point I think.
