The show's portrayal of interracial relationships was surely way ahead of its time. Very progressive.

I hated this programme when I was young. It conjures up memories of the Saturday night dinner table which more often than not consisted of chicken, chips and peas.
My mum always used to boil the chicken for some reason. Even back then I seemed to realise that chicken was better roasted. The chips were always home made and sometimes not great. Peas were the tinned garden variety. I preferred processed but my opinion didn't carry much weight. At least the boiled chicken was better than the sometimes boiled ox tongue.
In fairness to my mum, she had very little time on her hands having to care for my invalid grandmother 24/7. Even now I feel the utter boredom that that show caused me. Strange that it should end up controversial. It didn't cross my mind for a second that black people were being referenced. I definitely wouldn't have ever spoken to a black person in the 60s. I might not even have seen one.
I gave that initial thought a few moments just now and I think I'm being accurate.
I too hated this programme when I was a kid. We did have a black kid at school, but I never put two and two together with the Minstrels. I just thought they were a towering pile of really dull shit.
Yes awful programme.. Saturday night wasn't it about 8 o'clock..

Me too. Although I remember my maternal grandparents watching every week. Possibly the most boring program on TV for a kid of the seventies, along with the news, of course.
I actually liked it, and I wonder if exposure to the music hall tunes and old-time jazz standards led to me liking more melodic music and jazz in later life.
