I went with the other half to see The Salt Path, which is a story about a couple in late middle age, Raynor and Moth, who lose their home and embark on a long coastal path walk with a tent; otherwise homeless. To make matters worse, Moth is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease which makes walking difficult.
We went to the Odeon in Loughborough. I hadn't been there before. The Loughborough cinema we went to last time has closed down now. I really liked the Odeon. It's a traditional old cinema that was converted to a multi-screen place years ago. Has a nice vibe. A pleasant caff area. Staffed by friendly teenage girls.
I really have mixed feelings about The Salt Path. It is, I believe, a very good film. Certainly Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs give natural, touching performances. But at the same time - I didn't enjoy it, I just found it depressing and a little traumatising. There is though, a release from the tension in the last 20 minutes at which point I did find it quite engaging.
If I'd known it was a true story with a sort of redemption in the conclusion, I would have enjoyed it more no doubt. It's an adaptation of a memoir written by Raynor.
Now perhaps better titled The Pinch of Salt Path.
