Plex, that age old personal streaming service and probably the most popular has just screwed its users again. I fiddled with it in the past but there were a few things put me off - like having to have a Plex Pass to hardware transcode and having to be authenticated with their servers online before you can use it for your own media. Mix that with having to pay for the client apps and it was no-goer for me. Instead I went for the totally free and well-supported FOSS Jellyfin which may be a bit rougher around the edges and a little more complicated to set up but it's just as good, if not better in some aspects, as Plex.
Now Plex has decided that to use Plex remotely you either need a Plex Pass or a Remote Watch Pass. And guess what, just before that announcement they doubled the cost of a lifetime Plex Pass to £189. There is obviously a lot of anger from the Plex community and Reddit comments are quite vicious in their condemnation of Plex's actions. Many are jumping ship to Jellyfin - which only a good thing, but I can see the Jellyfin forums being full of ex-Plex users trying to configure their systems.
I'm just happy I never went down the Plex hole in that past and I'm totally happy with Jellyfin - which will always be free and much better than the Plex experience IMO.
Yep tried plex a few years ago but never got on with it.. been using Jellyfin for a while now.. got installed via a docker and it just works..
