Opeth were very good on Friday night. Good mix of songs, if a bit growly for Mrs S. Still almost a live band - taped bits of Ian Anderson speaking - thought the drummer had four arms at one point, but the drum tech was hitting a drum and bits of percussion from behind.
With it being in Brum we got the obligatory Napalm Death cover. Just once, not the four times last time I saw them in Brum.
Support act Grand Magus were decent too, proper meat and two veg METAL, a three piece with a Flying V playing guitarist, a bassist with an eight string Rickenbacker and a drummer with double bass drums. Somewhere between Manowar with a sense of humour and Saxon.

Slightly annoyed that the Tygers Of Pan Tang are supporting on a few dates, but not this one :(

I saw Sea Power in Birmingham last night, on their 'Soundtracks Live' tour. I knew it was going to be something a bit different - music mostly from their soundtrack albums.
Fair play to the band for doing something a bit different but it really dragged. Mostly heavy, slow and ponderous. No crowd pleasers save the final The Great Skua. Also, and unusally, Hamilton (bass player and occasional singer) had more lead vocal tunes than Yan (usual singer). Hamilton just does not sing in tune and he genuinely made me wince at least four times.
Since Woody left the band a couple of years ago his place has been taken on tour by a drummer called Tom White. He's a really powerful, technical drummer. And last night he turned up singing and playing guitar in the support act, White Magic for Lovers which is a duo with his husband Alfie. He played beautifully. Talented guy.

Yes. There's somewhere for an old man to sit down at the back between sets. The bar staff are friendly. I forgot to bring my earplugs and they gave me a free pair. Good sound as well. Not many bands I'd travel that far for though.

Out to see Hawkwind last night. Can't believe I've only seen them nine times. I was talking to a bloke last night who's been seeing them since 1975 and I'm sure I recalled more than nine. Setlist.fm says otherwise, it must be right as I'm an inveterate ticket keeper.
Anyway, last night was as good, if not better as any Hawkwind show I've seen, an old mate of mine who was there last night and is also a veteran Hawkwind fellow traveller agreed. Can't believe Richard Chadwick has been thumping the tubs since 1988, he's the second longest serving Hawk, but then I do remember him with Black hair.
The UK's premier Duran Duran tribute band Duran, at the Castle Inn, Castle Donington on Saturday night. They were very good! We had a blast. I went because the keyboard player is one of my Second Life chums.
A disproportionate amount of middle-aged women were present; the air was thick with Impulse body spray and unresolved Simon Le Bon fantasies.
The Duran Duran tunes are often cleverer than you'd think - lots of creative chord inversions in the guitar parts.

Went to see BÖC at The Palladium Sunday night. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I think the last time I saw them live was about 35 years ago! I'm pleased to say that they are still a great live act even if there are only two of the original members in the band (Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma). I believe the last (proper) studio record, The Symbol Remains, has rejuvenated them somewhat given the quality of the songs and the positive reviews. It seemed that only a few years ago they were destined to play only smaller clubs but they've created a lot more interest of late and the show was a sellout.
Friends attended the Soft White Underbelly (IYKYK) gig the night before where they played a couple of my favourite tracks that didn't get played Sunday ( I Love the Night and Then Came the Last Days of May). That's always going to be an issue with a band that has so much top quality material.
I guess there is a slim chance of seeing them live again but given that Eric is now 80, time is running out. I'm so glad I decided to make the trek up to the Big Smoke for this, the only regret is not seeing both shows.
The band have sustained a career defined by great songwriting and consistent live performances wrapped in a truly enigmatic presentation. Easily in my top 5 favourite bands.
First night of the Maiden tour and they are posting the setlist as it unfolds. I am not going to spoil it for anyone but I may reconsider buying tickets..Oh my!

Weirdly....i recently came across a mini documentary from the 1990 No Prayer tour taken from Newcastle City Hall...and I see myself front row centre in my Hold Your Fire T-shirt. I only got the ticket on the day of the gig from the box office because I'd done in to get a ticket for Hall & Oates...weird seeing that 35 years later!

I've managed 7 Metallishows between 1985 and 2009. Whilst the last three times have been Arenas I won't go see them again as I don't do Arenas and I certainly don't do Stadiums.
Now if they'd come back to Sheffield City Hall...

Unexpectedly, I got a free ticket to see Holy Holy in Oxford tonight. I knew they were playing as a good friend I went to the BÖC gig with expressed interest in going.
For those who are unaware, they are a band put together to play Bowie tunes by producer Tony Visconti featuring Woody Woodmansey (Spiders from Mars) on drums and Glen Gregory (Heaven 17) on vocals. Visconti plays bass guitar and the band is an eight piece with two guitars, keyboards, a backing vocalist and Visconti's daughter on sax, acoustic guitar and backing vocals.
Another mate had two tickets that his wife obtained through a ticket club for £5 each! Chris was looking for some company after his wife decided not to go.
It was a great gig with all the classics. Gregory's vocals were on-point and the band were very tight

For those who are unaware, they are a band put together to play Bowie tunes by producer Tony Visconti featuring Woody Woodmansey (Spiders from Mars) on drums and Glen Gregory (Heaven 17) on vocals. Visconti plays bass guitar and the band is an eight piece with two guitars, keyboards, a backing vocalist and Visconti's daughter on sax, acoustic guitar and backing vocals.
Another mate had two tickets that his wife obtained through a ticket club for £5 each! Chris was looking for some company after his wife decided not to go.
It was a great gig with all the classics. Gregory's vocals were on-point and the band were very tight

I didn't recognise a few of the songs but I think they were early ones from The Man Who Sold The World. I think the most recent song was Where Are We Now? from The Next Day. Most of the material was from TMWSTW, Hunky Dory and Ziggy but we also got Rebel Rebel, Heroes, Ashes to Ashes and Drive-In Saturday. Of course, Space Oddity was there. Alas, No Suffragette City and quite surprisingly nothing from one of his biggest records, Let's Dance.
I didn't realise that Holy Holy have been a band since 2015 (Gregory recounts the story of how they played a gig in Canada the night after Bowie died), I thought they had been formed recently. Certainly the best Bowie tribute act anyone is likely to see.
I can't believe it's nearly ten years since he passed away.

Third gig of the week for me last night. Samantha Fish at the O2 Academy in Oxford.

Went to see Iggy Pop at a 1 day festival in Kilmainham Hospital yesterday.
3 stages all within easy reach of each other and an intriguing line up.
Unfortunately I missed John Cooper Clarke but saw some of Meryl Streak, a very angry yet entertaining Dublin Punk
The Scratch, an energetic bunch, combining punk, Irish traditional, hard rock and humour. Will look out for these again
Slowdive, I knew of these as they are one of my daughter's favourites but hadn't heard much of them. Really enjoyable live actually. Loud guitars and ethereal vocals. Never thought I'd be a Shoegaze fan but these are great.
And then onto Iggy. Never been a huge fan but this man is phenomenon. 78 and bouncing around the stage with more energy than a man half his age. Fantastic backing group too.
Going with my son was a real spur of the moment thing but so glad I went.
The venue was great with a natural amphitheatre. Surprised more gigs aren't held there.

I don't know either but I can kind of picture it. I remember asking a girl to dance at a metal gig. She was really pretty, wearing a massively long Afghan, but aware only of her shoes and not my existence. I assumed her weed was in those shoes.
I'd like to see the kind of dance you were offering....at a metal gig ;D ;)
Funnily enough, my daughter, who is into this genre didn't know either - I annoy her by calling it shoe shine!
Named because the guitarists are looking downwards at their instruments! or their shoes!

Due to the shame I can remember it quite clearly. It was a place in Sauchiehall St, I think it was called The Venue, and they would play music before the band came on stage. They were playing an Ozzy track as I suffered my bout of invisibility.😂
Dark Angel last night; one of the hottest sweatiest gigs I have been to in a long time. Fantastic band.

The summer season of gigs at surely one of the best medium-sized venues in the country was kicked-off with a sold out two-night stint from evergreen Indie darlings James.
I attended the second night and it was, well, just okay in all honesty.
For this more casual fan there were too many ploddy, maudlin numbers (I'd come for a few hours' escape from depressing subject matter, not to be subjected to it) and my favourite James songs Born Of Frustration and Sound had arrangements that were a little too laid back, lacking the punch of the studio album versions. Tim Booth is a laudably humble guy, but there were too many times where I just wondered why he and his band seem to hide their lights under a bushel. Another slight disappointment was the absence of She's A Star, which I could hear drifting across and up through Shibden Valley the night before while walking my dog round my village.
Still, there were welcome occasions which lifted the spirits: a rousing version of Tomorrow, Booth's crowd-surfing during Getting Away With It and an encore where the trumpeter performed from one of the Venetian-style balconies before re-joining the rest of the band for the climactic Sit Down. It was a good way to finish, but it had been a rather meandering journey to get there.

BCC was brilliant. Hughes at 75 :o Unreal.
Bonamassa cuts through and Bonham, although the light touch of his father is not there, is brilliant keeping it all together. Sherinian weaves in and out and makes his Hammond sound ethereal.
And they make it look so easy and so much fun. Quintessential classic rock band with equal parts Zeppelin, Purple and a touch of bluesy funk.
If they ever come round again I'll be there as well.
I love a bit of Shoegaze, will type more when I get back.

Looking closer at the thread I see that Dom has already covered this, but supposedly the term comes from the habit of guitar players looking at their pedal board - because typically they'd use a lot of effects. Personally I think it has as much to do with the introspective, almost diffident demeanour of the performers, you'd never bounce around the stage in a Shoegaze band.
I think of Lush as being shoegaze pioneers. Dreamy 9th chords, open tunings.
Our own (TNMS) CQ introduced me to this band (a project really) about ten years ago, I thought they were terrific. Heavy Shoegaze. Actually it must have been at least 13 years ago, because I see I commented on the video then.

Arenas, such as the cavernous amphitheatre in the heart of Leeds's city centre, are not places for comedy gigs; I know this. Some may argue they're not great places to see rock gigs either, and I'd agree with that to an extent. So in both cases I make sure that if I do attend I'm no further away from the stage than I would be at a theatre or Academy-sized gig.
I was five rows from the front for this show, where Ricky Gervais casually graces almost 14,000 people with 70 minutes of his time. Yep, that seems short, but at least the tickets are nowhere near the three-figure mark that's charged to see certain other arena-touring comedians.
So with success that has seen his stand-up revenue enter the Guinness Book Of Records, Gervais isn't going to reinvent the wheel: all the crowd-pleasing elements are present and in the right places. He's the AC/DC of adult humour, and indeed enters the stage to Highway To Hell as if to prove the point.
His schtick is to set-up a routine with points constructed from logic and reason, before delivering a punchline that aims to be as rude and crude as possible, often with a post-punchline "topper" to dial the outrage up to eleven. He's extremely good at it and - most of the time - it lands well.
It's a show that's short but sweet - or should that be satisfyingly sour.

Back from watching a couple of Von Hertzen Brothers shows at the Tufnell Park Dome (First ever visit) and Nottingham Rescue Rooms (Third time seeing the VHBs alone).
Both shows we were up against the front barrier, both shows were excellent. Look the VHBs are never less than excellent, why they don't play Arenas I don't know, but then if they did I wouldn't go, so they can stay at the level they are thank you very much.
Very different listening experiences from night to night. At the Dome we were up against the stage and virtually all you could hear was the on stage amps, which at the very least shows the band are live. We had the bass cabinet to our immediate right, then one guitarist's amp to the left the other behind the Bass cab. At Rock City the PA mix dominated, so we ended up with the best of both worlds.
Because Mrs S has a crush on main man Mikko Von Hertzen we stayed behind both nights and had a word with them, they all seem nice guys and Mrs S now has a photo with each of them. I got a CD booklet signed each night, first night was their Nine Lives album Mikko asked me "Where did you get this?", "From my CD rack" I replied. Seems that CD copies are in very short supply and lots of new VHB fans are always asking if it will be reissued. I got mine on release of course.
We've now been set the challenge of getting them to play Nottingham Rock City, a venue four or five times the size of the Rescue Rooms, we were exhorted to bring our Aunties along - we told them we'd have to dig ours up...
It's funny, but there were people in the queue I see and speak to more than my family members who don't live with me.
Red Rum Club in Leicester last night. Sold out and the crowd was very enthusiastic - I must say they gave a very spirited and exuberant performance. I was entertained but I don't think I'd buy a record. The songs are a bit simple.
I was standing right at the back with my back to the bar. I felt a bit conspicuous because - since it was a rainy night - I was wearing my anorak, which is a sort of dayglo green. The last song was dedicated to the bar staff and "the bloke in the green jacket".

First time seeing Moving Pictures last night (O2 Academy, Oxford). Bit of a thrill to see a Rush tribute in a larger venue and they didn't disappoint.
A reverse chronological set-list saw them hitting the stage with Headlong Flight and winding up with 2112. Lots of deeper cuts featured that other Rush tributes don't play made for a really interesting set. Surprise of the night had to be a solid rendition of Losing It which saw bass/keys/vocals man, Eóin de Paor, on the electric violin, Mink/Dinklage stylee - wow! Honourable mentions also to Between The Wheels, Marathon, Strangiato and A Farewell To Kings.
Jamie Dunleavy on drums was absolutely stunning (why didn't she get the phone call?). If she missed a stroke, I didn't see it. And it looked like she was having a ball!
Difficult for me to make an accurate assessment of the sound/mix as I'd decided to utilise my 'Ear Peace' attenuators due to my recent test with the audiologist. I'm glad I did because, by all accounts, it was loud! Unfortunately they completely destroy the top-end and you're left with a somewhat muffled representation of what you should be hearing. However, needs must.
Nice to see a big crowd of TNMS guys and gals out to celebrate R60. And a big thank you to Pudders and Lou for the lift home - legends!

Just noticed, £16.30 for a pint of Brixton IPA and a bottle of Hobgoblin - jeesus!!!
I really like the Alpine Tune earplugs I bought recently. I think they offer a very clear concert sound without muffling and they're really easy to slip in and out for parts you wish to hear full volume. It's a very personal thing though, especially if there's also impairment.

The mix was a bit guitar heavy, which was fine by me as it made New Rush more palatable.
The drummer was very good.

The mix was a bit guitar heavy, which was fine by me as it made New Rush more palatable.
The drummer was very good.
Drinks prices were outrageous for a northerner...

Pudders only introduced me to Patrick and Ron (I think). I'd already met Bez at a Pudders birthday bash in Witney. Seemed like a really tight-knit bunch of nice folks.

Difficult for me to make an accurate assessment of the sound/mix as I'd decided to utilise my 'Ear Peace' attenuators due to my recent test with the audiologist. It was good to meet you if only briefly. Excellent gig but the mix was horrible, way too much guitar (and I like guitars) which drowned everything else out. As you said the drummer is bloody good.

I was also at this and totally agree the mix was dreadful - the guitar was so loud it made everything else sound like it was in a different room.
And David, how did we not meet? Or did we - I was quaffing those two-pinters of Poretti so certain recollections of the night are a bit blurry! :)
