Title: Drum Songs
Post by: Slim on December 07, 2024, 01:09:06 PM
The Neil Peart Experiment thread (http://betweenthewheels.net/index.php?topic=822) made me think about songs that are notable, for me, for the drums. I confess that I don't really listen to the drums when I listen to music. I've always thought as the drum part as a sort of "keeping the time" thing, almost subliminal.

For example if I think of YYZ - I can bring to mind the guitar part and the synth parts. Actually I can't much remember what the bass does, except that it tracks the guitar riff. And still less the drums. I can remember some of the fills I think.

But there are some tunes where the drums do make their presence felt in a big way. The one that comes to mind for Rush is Anthem. Also Test For Echo in which Neil manages to get into a sort of groove, something he usually can't manage.

I think there are a lot of Who tunes where the drums play a lead role. Here's a Lizzy tune featuring Brian Downey where the drums definitely play a prominent part:

Yes the album was groundbreaking, genre defining even.
But everyone in the drumming community talked about the drums first, and then the songs.

Great choice.  Also the track uses only one chord throughout, which accentuates the rhythm section, and features one of The Edge's best guitar solos, which is all the more impactful because of the above reasons.

Today's sad news about Les Binks passing made me think of this:
