Actually already started! I was surprised to hear on the radio yesterday that some of the footy and rugby (if I remember correctly) were already taking place.

Having a chuckle on an article.

Apparently the athletes sleep on specially designed cardboard beds, reducing carbon footprint and all.
I know every little thing helps, but the number of flights required to get everybody there, the elephant in the room, is a hot potato.

Post by: Slim on July 25, 2024, 02:00:34 PM
Yes, ridiculous. And this sort of gesturing does nothing for climate change, it just reinforces the narrative that you can make a difference by measures that are in truth ineffectual.

Just did a bit of research, very (very) roughly a cardboard bed might have a cardboard footprint of 20kg. A metal bed might have a carbon footprint of 80kg.

But a metal bed will last a lot longer than a cardboard bed, and anyway both can be recycled. I'd be more impressed if they'd bought some cheap second-hand beds.

Most of the athletes travelling a significant distance will get there by charter flights I think, and the plane they're on will be knocking out about 15kg a minute. Of course there might be more than 100 athletes and support staff on a single flight.

And the athletes accommodation has no air-conditioning - so the USA have brought over their own...

The sainted BBC staff have sent some staff by bicycle.

I'll watch the cycling - Road and Track; Rowing; Some Athletics and Swimming.

Cycling, of course and whatever else comes across my screen.

I like the cycling, actually it's the only time I watch cycling as a competitive sport. Will probably watch some of the athletics. Maybe a bit of the tennis. No doubt I'll listen to other stuff while out on a bike from time to time.

Great Britain holds the distinction of being the only country to have struck gold at every Olympic Games, although that's only because the USA boycotted Moscow in 1980.

Our gold medal performance for each Games:
That sudden increase from 1904 to the London games in 1908 is dramatic. I wonder why the home advantage was so impactful. More preparation? Events selected to favour British competitors?

At the Paris Olympics in 1900, there was a live pigeon shooting event. 300 birds were released in all. The winner, Leon de Lunden of Belgium, bagged 21 of them.

But why is the BBC obsessed with Simone Biles? She's American, do the Beeb not understand what the first B in BBC stands for? But on the BBC news website front page she's the first named as being in action today.

What's strange is that the Dutch media sort of picked this up a week or 2 ago when it got out he is not staying in the Olympic village. I was not aware of this at all.

What's even more strange is the reports that this 8 years ago, he was tried and convicted, served his time and is now free. So why the preferential treatment in placing him outside the village then? Reports here say to make others feel more comfortable. Strange all together.

This is a weird one but if you think about it, an important principle of sport and the Olympic ideal is that it's open to all. I would say though that his sentence appears, to me, to have been remarkably lenient. I assume his age at the time (19) must have been taken into account.

Just had a look on Wikipedia. The judge at Aylesbury Crown Court gave him four years, but he was transferred to the Netherlands to serve his sentence and did 13 months, which isn't much less than he'd have done in a British prison.

The judge told him "Your hopes of representing your country [as an Olympic athlete] now lie as a shattered dream" and in an address to the court on sentencing said "plainly it is a career end for him".

As it happens I found out years ago that an old friend of mine became a sex offender in 2015, for downloading child porn. He got a suspended sentence, but nonetheless the impact to his life must have been massive. I've had no contact with him at all but I've often wondered - how do you find a job? He'd been a journalist, what do you do to find work with a crime like that on your CV? How do you meet people, how can you ever make friends or start a relationship? He was separated and single last time I saw him in 2013. There's no way you can cover up something like that these days, I found out about it because he'd disappeared from Facebook and a minute of googling uncovered what had happened.

I've always assumed it must have capsized his life on every level and yet this beach volleyball player, having been convicted of a considerably more serious offence has met someone, got married and is competing at the Olympics. I suppose the excuse that he was only 19 at the time has something to do with it.

Anyway .. sorry to pull the thread down a dark path.

I thought of that myself, but the mere fact that this is out in the open, he served his time and has moved on should be some form of testament that the 'system' works.
I get it, it's scary , no one wants to live next to a sex offender - me neither for that matter, and I don't even have children - buit the ones we know of are the tip of the iceberg. And I'd rather know that don't know.

Finally the first Dutch medal is in. Rowing, I'd almost say 'of course' and it's a gold one at that.

Sifan Hassan has announced what she will be doing these Olympics as well, 5k,10k and the Marathon  :o looking forward to that! Last time she had gold in the 5 and 10 and bronze on the 1500m.

He knows the rules. Don't see it happening to anyone else.

Wish the BBC would remember what the first 'B' in their name stands for. By all means report on who has won what, but don't keep banging on about bloody foreigners all the time. At the swimming they put a French flag on the games mascot for some Froggo swimmer. Would a foreigner broadcaster do the same for a British athlete?

And as for the deification of Simone Biles, she's not the Bloody Messiah and I very much doubt she's had the time to be a very naughty girl.

We're still a gold medal behind the French at the moment, but I'm looking to Team GB to assert Britain's dominance as Europe's pre-eminent Olympic power in the coming days.

The French have delivered a sub-par Games so far, it must be said. The embarrassing opening ceremony, the inferior swimming pool, the pollution in the Seine causing events to be delayed. But the Johnson Olympics of 2012 set the bar very high.

I don't see how you can say it wasn't the Johnson Olympics, when he was in charge of London throughout the planning and execution of the 2012 Olympic Games in that city. I'm not saying it's a commonly used term, but it's an extremely accurate one.

On whether the French are cheating - I think it's highly possible. Interesting to see how the Games unfold during the mainstream athletics events.

First article - sour grapes or what!  She lost to her compatriot who set a new olympic record in the process!

And completely put down by the Australian Swimming coach - her boss

"The Olympics has always been a challenge. Every Olympics I've been a part of, every Olympic Games that you see, is a test of athletes' ability to come here, compete and perform when it matters," insisted the 56-year-old.

Second article - I think it was a mistake not to have a second course set up for the triathalon,  although from a legacy perspective the cleaning up of the Seine will be a huge achievement.

Confusion explained:
these boats, the 49-ers sail in this bay a lot, there's a lot of competition going on there, and the finish is always in the same spot. Except for today.. For some reason the finishline was pushed toward where a different type of race finishes. They just didn't bother to tell the Teams... some of them icked it p from the buoys, who had a different race number on them. Luckily the Dutch ladies saw it in the nick of time.

I've learned to live with pain. Nearly. But it sticks in the craw.

The "Irish" bloke who won a swimming Gold was born in Leeds. Not in Ireland. Aside from that he lived in Norn Iron which is the UK, we're too soft on these plastics, letting them compete for the enemy. Especially as when it suits - Commonwealth Games - he competes for Norn Iron.

I know they probably won't win but the "Irish" cyclists in tomorrow's road race are Ben Healy (Kingswinford) and Ryan Mullen (Birkenhead)

Interesting. At the last four they've had 16,11,17,10 gold medals.

They could possibly add another seven (three as I type) to match Tokyo - depends how good they are at the events in the later stage.

That was a good race. Slow burner to start, but it just kept ramping up, then Remco getting a puncture 4k out, wow!
We need more racing without radios.

Wasn't bothered who won today - so long as it wasn't a Froggo or a turncoat.

Well, the Women's Road Race took off in the last 40k or so. Way to make a mistake by letting Kristen Faulkner go. Marianne Vos, the almost GOAT (she ain't Beryl Burton) never outside the top 10 in the Olympics road race.

Plucky Brit Pfeiffer Georgi in 5th, she could have done with a flatter hill through Montmartre.

Excellent race from Vos, Silver in her 5th(!) Olympic, Faulkner was very strong, she was the one leading Kopecky. Deserved win.

Listened to an interesting conversation on 5 Live yesterday about how improvements in track surfaces and shoe technology, in combination with diet science, better training, statistics analysed by computers and all that have helped sprinters go faster and faster over the years.

Despite this, the women's 100m world record is still held by Florence Griffith-Joyner, who recorded her time in 1988 - 10.49 seconds. The men's 100m record has been broken many times since then but no woman has got close to FloJo's time.

She unexpectedly retired at the age of 29, just before mandatory drug testing was introduced.

Quite clear she was drugged up immensely. Saw the 400M women's series this morning, the WR is still from 1985, some DDR lady  ::)

I did read a couple of interviews a while ago with long distance runners. Nike and New Balance try to outdo each other contsanty on who has the fastest shoes. Mind you, these things cost a fortune and are done after one race, marathons are won by the shoes, well at least partially they are. Technology, eh?

Swedish Pole Vault Guy was amazing, couldn't believe what I was seeing.

I've had an idea for the pole vault. Instead of that bar they have that spans the two upright stands, they could use lasers. You could have 15 or 20 lasers active at any one time, at different heights. The vaulters's performance would be measured by the highest laser beam that didn't break.

That way, no need to mess about with going at different heights.

I think that the Swedish guy actually cleared the bar by 2 or 3cm. Using a series of lasers arranged at 0.5cm intervals, he'd have got credit for that.

Gold and Silver medallists Keely Hodgkinson and Mary Moraa congratulate each other after the womens' 800m event; a crop from the BBC's coverage taken 16 seconds after the winner crossed the finish line. I'm really surprised that an athlete would wear a watch in that circumstance; even a lightweight one. As far as I could see, none of the other competitors had one on.

I cropped a better pic of the same watch from her Insta feed:

The horizontal lines on the dial made me think it was an Aqua Terra. I think it's one of these, an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Ultra Light.

Sponsoring is the word when you speak about watches... Why would Pogacar or Alaphillippe wear a watch even in a TT? Mind you, they wear 250-300K watches.

What suprises me more, and who am I to speak on appearances, I see a lot of women wear wigs, large ones at that. They weigh some, not to mention the aerodynamics. Speaking of which: why oh why are they still pinning the start numbers onto shirts?? Beyond me.
And some men wear entire jewelry stores. Baffling.

Fourth is third loser :) I could say that the plucky British lass came a very creditable 7th, but I won't, because it's not fucking good enough. And a plastic Bahraini won it.

Benjamin Thomas was eliminated in the Elimination race of the omnium and then reinstated for no apparent reason. If that result had stood he wouldn't have won gold.

Been a bit of an omnishambles all round in the velodrome with bells for the last lap being rung too late or not all.

Would it have helped if the woman jumped over bigger hurdles? I think that with the height of female athletes today they should be. The winning time tonight was only just outside the qualification times for the 400m flat.

Plus Ms Bol had raced the mixed relay.

Gold in climbing for the UK. Boulder and Lead - Toby Roberts, only 19. I watched it live - it looks incredible what these guys can do.

The first ever medal in climbing for GB&NI too.

I got it wrong about Squash in this Olympics (it's actually LA 2028 instead). Rather, we get these ridiculous 'sports' like feckin' break dancing and skate boarding. What next: Darts, Dominoes and Pool. I heard today that the first medal GB ever won was in 1896 - in Weightlifting, one handed. I'd rather watch that or tug-of-war than some snotty kids spinning on the floor.

Yep we've been beaten by the Dutch team as well as the French; that's disappointing. In all honesty I think there's probably been a bit of cheating going on on the part of the organisers. Some of the officiating, especially in the boxing, was clearly intended to disadvantage British competitors. I still wonder about that puncture in the mountain biking. Sabotage? Then of course the trap shooting woman from Team GB who was improperly made to make do with silver when it was claimed she hadn't hit her target.

Then there's the poor accommodation and food (no doubt many of the French athletes had their own accommodation).

But we must remember that not all the peoples of the world share the British instinct for fair play, and get on with it. The Americans will make a better job of an Olympics than the French have this time, of that I have no doubt.

Well, British Cyclists had their own hotel, but I read an article last night in which a turncoat British cyclist (former junior UK Omnium champion) who now cycles for the French and he said that they were in a country Chateau with the best chefs and support staff available - and he's only a reserve.

Still, overall we got more medals than the French and we did come third in the Medal's table at London, then second at Rio. France cannot match that.

Boxing officiating did look dodgy at times but that had absolutely nothing to do with the host nation. (Indeed the host nation did not benefit anyway)

Well, no surprise at all that the French made it an Omnishambles and cheated to get their athletes in a better place :)

Don't kid yourself. A UK audience would have done exactly the same had one of their own appeared to have been cheated against.

This thread is excellent proof of that!

In the main audiences were hugely receptive and appreciative of competitors, whatever their nationality.

Of course this was enhanced if the competitors were French. You would expect nothing less.

And the 'omnishambles' was not judged by the hosts.

The medals were designed by French luxury jeweller Chaumet and are set with a piece of iron taken from the Eiffel Tower during renovation in the 20th Century.

I'm sure I'd do my best to put a brave face on it as well, but - events delayed due to pollution in the Seine, an embarrassing opening ceremony, women's boxing gold medals being won by people who are more or less men and had failed IBA gender tests. The shallow, substandard swimming pool. Athletes complaining of discomfort from the cheapo cadboard beds they were made to put up with, and the poor food they were offered. A child rapist competing in one of the events. The French railway system collapsing on the eve of the Games. Breakdancing masquerading as an Olympic event. Demonstrably incompetent or possibly deliberately unfair officiating.

And now it seems that crappy medals have been handed out.

These were a poor Games and I suspect the authorities will think twice before permitting France to host a Games again.

No they wouldn't because Brits are bastions of fair play and decency - away from Soccerball. Most Brits wouldn't know Pidcock from a Piddock.

I spent half my working life working for a French owned company. It has left deep psychological scars, if you worked in accounts you'd understand. There's much more room for Liberté in UK accounting.

In the next job I had, funnily enough we had one salesman in France and when I first saw the accounts he sent over I had severe flashbacks with the common chart of accounts being used. I mentioned this to my boss and he began a fifteen minute tirade about how BONKERS the French system was, he was not too impressed by American accounting either when we got taken over by a US firm - if you think I'm bad...

Hopefully we can now be free from hearing the moronic "Allez les Bleus" chant, or "Errrr, Urr, UH" as ot sounds to me. And all being well in 2028 the time difference will spare me hearing the moronic "YES-ESS-AY".

The IOC will give the games to wherever offers the most money. It's about commerce not sport, at the games you have to have the right Credit Card to pay, drink one choice of beer, have one choice of soft drink, eat branded processed pap.

The head of the IOC steps down in 2025, the best that can be hoped is that Seb Coe gets the job. But will probably go to the French man who gives the best backhander.

It always made me chuckle that Gary Verity who brought the Tour de France to Yorkshire and set up the Tour de Yorkshire lost his job at Welcome to Yorkshire for alleged Expense fiddling, yet Christian Prudhomme boss of the Tour de France under whose auspices the Tour de Yorkshire was run, probably sits on a mountain of ill-gotten Euro notes gained from the burghers of TdF Start/Finish towns whilst stroking a white cat.

The whole reason he still sits there is because no one has expressed any interest in taking on the job. And I would not envy the person that does. You can never do the right thing, willingly or not. 2028 LA, 2032 Brisbane and most likely 2036 will be Qatar. No one in their right mind would want to chair that, especially the latter.

Anyway, the next person to chair will not come from Europe I suspect. There have only ever been Europeans as chairs in the modern Games' history.

In hindsight this was an error, it was an ambitious plan that didn't work out. Still from a legacy perspective it will be a huge plus for the city and the country

Quotean embarrassing opening ceremony,

I don't think the French were embarrassed by it and it was part if the overall ethos of the games to integrate the city into the games. Beach volleyball played under the Eiffel tower, the spectacular courses that the marathon and road biking courses were run on and so on. They brought the city to the games and the games to the city.

QuoteWomen's boxing gold medals being won by people who are more or less men and had failed IBA gender tests

Not going to get into that argument as it had nothing to do with the French or the organisation of the games.

QuoteThe shallow, substandard swimming pool.

15 Olympic records and 5 World records were created in that swimming pool.

QuoteAthletes complaining of discomfort from the cheapo cadboard beds they were made to put up with, and the poor food they were offered.
.
I heard lots and lots of competitors praising the games and their experience of it  A couple of moany ones went on about the beds and one or 2 food failures were gleefully seized on by the anti french media over here.

QuoteA child rapist competing in one of the events.

Nothing to do with France or the hosting committee

QuoteThe French railway system collapsing on the eve of the Games.

A terrorist attack that did cause substantial damage but which was corrected very quickly and only caused minimal disruption.

QuoteBreakdancing masquerading as an Olympic event.

Bizarre decision that. Breakdancing was at its height 40 years ago I thought?  Anyway the decision to involve it in these games was by the IOC. Nothing to do with France or the organising committee

QuoteDemonstrably incompetent or possibly deliberately unfair officiating.

The officials in question were neither French nor appointed by the French

Quoteand now it seems that crappy medals have been handed out.

These were a poor Games and I suspect the authorities will think twice before permitting France to host a Games again.

The medals are iconic, each containing metal from the Eiffel Tower.

The Games were a spectacular success and France pulled out all the stops to showcase the City and enhance the Olympic movement. The IOC will be lucky to get as good a host as this again and will be delighted to bring the games back to France
Title: Re: Paris Olympics

I guess we'll just have to disagree about that, Dom. I doubt the IOC will consider France again for a very long time after these games, and we'll be unfortunate indeed if the Americans don't improve dramatically on what were, in all honesty, a poor Games, for reasons I've already articulated. Not a disaster, but certainly disappointing.
Title: Re: Paris Olympics

You have to at least accept that a number of things you mentioned were completely out of the control of the hosting committee.

It feels that you are starting (a bit like Nick who obviously has issues stemming from his inability to cope with the French accounting system) from an anti French perspective and this is seriously clouding your vision.

I don't think I can say anything to change that.

I, like the vast majority of the World, enjoyed it.
Title: Re: Paris Olympics

It's true that some of the contributing factors to the overall sense of disappointment were not under the direct control of the French, but some were and I do wonder if some of the unfairness that spoiled the Games for many (and probably resulted in an illegitimate medal table) is ultimately, without spelling it out, due (let's say) to French influence.

I did enjoy the Games but at the same time, I did wish they were a bit better.

I coped with the French accounting system, but was just frustrated by its complete and utter bureaucratic rigidity, you must do it this way, there is no other way. Where I worked we costed steam produced and had scope in the accounts for it, Until the Frogs took over, we then had to classify it as "Wet Effluent". Lots of niggly little things like that. To compound things the published accounts were produced according to US GAAP not French GAAP.

If the French hadn't closed down the company I worked for - Funny how whenever a plant had to close due to shrinking world markets it was never a French one - I'd have ended up working for a Belgian company, don't know if it would have been Flemish speaking though.
