I've used Superbru again to set up a pool for friends n family for a bit of fun.. for the above.. not sure how easy it would be for anyone interested on here so we could set up our own btw pool for a bit of a laugh
I'm in! Sounds like a bit of fun.

I knew we'd get stuffed.. we're shit
I think I predicted 4-1. It's now 3-0 at half time so I'm in with a chance.

Ur almost there...
I've gone 1-1, 2-0, 2-0 for Hungary / Swtzerland, Spain / Croatia, Italy / Albania respectively.
I went 2-0 for Germany / Scotland.
Well, the Swiss have done their bit. Just waiting for Hungary to level up now.
Four games in, sixteen goals and counting.
The good thing about being in last place is that things can only improve... ;D
I've gone with:
Poland 1 - 2 Netherlands
Slovenia 1 - 0 Denmark
Serbia 1 - 3 England
Curiously I got this for the first two picks.
Would those first two scores really be an upset?

Second one maybe, first one surely not?
I wonder if the site is popular in Poland, and the warning is based on other competitors' predictions.
I went with Slovenia to win because I fancy Benjamin Sesko to score.

making friends I see..
Ukraine - Romania I've got it down as 3-0 for Ukraine. Currently 3-0 Romania lol
Forgot to pick - fool!
I had a draw.. kin hell...
I had a draw as well, should have gone with my first instinct which was 1-0 to Romania.
Draw as well..
looks like my forgetfulness didn't cost me too much ::)
I had planned on going with a 3 0 win for Romania - how did it finish?
Come on Belgium ffs..
Well I had the Belgians down to win, but .. couldn't help laughing when they got robbed just now ;D
I had Belgium and Slovakia as a draw. I can't believe the Belgians couldn't equalise.
I had France to win 1-0 then changed it to 2-0 .. idiot...
I've gone for 2-0 in both games today, with Portugal and Turkey to emerge as winners if I'm right.
I have wins for Portugal and turkey...
Tremendously entertaining game this after 70 minutes and Turkey have scored the top two best goals of the tournament so far!
Turkey were great but wish they'd kept at 2...
I went for a draw. Scoreline doesn't reflect the fact that it was so close to happening. Unlucky Georgia
I've just checked my prediction for Portugal vs Czech Republic. I put 2-1 for The Czechs for some crazy reason. ??? ???
Well I got both results basically right. Bit disappointed Portugal won to be honest, all the same.
Well, that's all the Game Day 1 matches done - all the ones I've seen have been very entertaining so far, with the obvious exception of the one with the Southgate Snoozeball. ::)
I've gone 2-1, 3-0, 2-1 for today's games with Croatia, Germany and Switzerland respectively as winners. Sorry, Scottish friends.
I've done tomorrow's as well, Spain and England winning 2-0 in both cases and a 1-1 draw in the other game.
Cro v Alb.. what a game...
Belting game that.
Fantastic! Croatians such a great individual power, not so much as a team.
Meanwhile I am back in last place even earning a wooden spoon.
That last gasp equaliser for Albania has lifted me to the top of the table (for now). :)
Had a croatia win but Albania deserved at least the draw .. Germany and Swiss win for later..

Pleased they did score that equaliser. Would have been even happier had I not picked Croatia to win
I'm supporting England, and anyone playing a member of the EU.
Have to say all the punditary bllx is just awful.. volume down for those bits..
Delighted whenever Hungary lose
Just left the last place - again.
Good win for Ze Germans, but they'll never be my favourite of course.
The usual Scotland hanging on by their fingernails bllx..
They could have snatched it! Glad they didn't though as I went for 1 - 1
Gone for Slovenia and Spain wins.. England draw..
The intensity of the Slovenia Serbia game is unreal :o
Let's soon how long they last in the 2nd half.
Best game day so far for me: 2 exacts and a close (had England to draw 2-2).
Forgot to pick Slovakia / Ukraine. But I would have gone with Slovakia to win, so I didn't miss any points.
I've gone 1-1 for Poland / Austria and France to bet The Netherlands 2-0. Sorry Nop. Holland have been my second international team since the days of Neeskens and Cruyff, so I'll be cheering them on. But I think they'll lose.

Quote from: Fishy on June 21, 2024, 10:02:32 PMHolland should have won., legitimate goal chalked off .. nonsense
Well it should have been a goal agreed but that wouldn't have necessarily led to an NL win. France would have been less risk averse and more likely to score.
Bit of shame yes, keeper could have never had that ball regardless where Dumfries was. But that's the game apparently these days.

If Cruyff had been able to play in the 78 World Cup they would have been World Champions! What a team they had in the 70s
I didn't get to watch England in a World Cup between the ages of 10 and 22. So like most people I picked an alternative side to support in '74 and '78, and it was Holland.
For this essentially historical reason, I wanted the Dutch to beat Spain in the 2010 World Cup Final. And yet they took such a cynical, ugly attitude into that game that I actually switched allegiance after the first 20 minutes, and I cheered when Iniesta got that goal at the last gasp.

He could have played if he really wanted to. Cruyff was a phenomenal player but not always the nicest person. Or the most business savvy.
Also: only Argentina would have won that 78 tournament, regardless. And that had nothing to do with football.

He is now technical director of the Dutch football association.
Well - I'm not going to pretend I wanted Scotland to win, but that was a very tense game. I definitely think Scotland should have had a pen. But Hungary seemed to me to dominate them in the second half and they were much better at keeping the ball to themselves.
Either way - what a story, eh?
The usual Scotland fuck up... hardly any attempts on goal..not sure it was a penalty really.. was either going to be 0-0 or Hungary 1-0 after the first half...
Tough to lose so late in the game but the quality is not quite there. And if Scotland couldn't qualify to the knock out stages in the past when the likes of Dalglish or Strachan, McQueen, Souness etc etc were playing, what chance now? Just not creating that standard of footballer anymore. Similar to the Republic of Ireland
Whoever get the Swiss in the 8th finals is in for a tough job.
Wahey, I'm up to second place. Strong performance on that last round.
Back where I belong, last place and hit over the head with a wooden spoon again.
My predictions are pretty bad this time..
Gone for a Spain win.. Italy draw..
Didn't do great on the predictions, but Albania's defeat means England are through to the knockout stage now - we can't do worse than a qualifying third place.
Poor old Croatia, but where did all that extra time come from. I've read that if England win by 3 clear goals Croatia can still go through - I can't see that happening though.
Didn't do bad, 4 points.
Holland is through because of the Albania loss. Let's see what tonight brings we play Austria.
That Italy last gasp goal helped me ..4.5 points last night..
Croatians blaming a Dutch ref, calling him a criminal, for the 8 mins of extra time. This is after the Croatian coach took 3 mins to sub a player when it was 1-0, and the captain took 3 mins to miss a penalty. Sore losers much?

That's the game, you can win or lose in the last minute. In all honesty, the Italians were piss poor, so were the Croatians. Both teams should perform much better with the quality of the players.
Some changes in out team that should make it interesting. Our man Geertruida is in, in favour of Dumfries, Malen is in and Veerman is back.
Let's see if we can beat Austria this way.
France struggled against them. I'd say you'd need to be a bit more adventurous than you were against France to secure the win
Quote from: dom on June 25, 2024, 03:35:27 PMFrance struggled against them. I'd say you'd need to be a bit more adventurous than you were against France to secure the win
It's a bit different than against France this time, Geertruida is Feyenoord, he is used to playing against teams like Austria that have their defenders high on the field, Malen is a very fast right winger from Dortmund that can cut trough the defense and Veerman is the boy with the golden pass.
In possession Geertruida will come up to the midfield creating a 3-4-4 situation. I am happy he chose for these guys, I think they will be able to cut through the Austrian defense.
Where I said 3-4-4, I meant 3-4-3 ;D

Gone got a France win... Holland to draw..
That was extremely disappointing and an appaling watch that 1st half.
Terrible.
Both games have been pretty bad
France were very poor for large sections of the half but just started to exert a decent spell of pressure with resultant chances towards the end
Infuriating watching France, similar to watching Netherlands I imagine Nop?
Yes, dreadful. Probably the worst game in years, and they even scored twice. And good goals as well. But it was a terrible performance.
None of tonight's scores did me any good at all
Reading the papers it looks like we'll either play England or the winner of the Belgium/Slowakia/Romania/Ukraine pool. Actually...we could have done worse. We are now in the 'weaker' side of the bracket. No Spain, Germany, Portugal or France. Not that that matters if you see the games from yesterday.
Gone for a Slovakia win.. Belgium draw and Portugal and Turkey wins...
England were dismal last night. Had a poor Euros so far, despite finishing top of the group. I believe Southgate probably intends to step down from that role anyway but if he loses his next game, he'll have no choice.

If that game is Holland it'll be do or die for both coaches.
I'm hoping for some better games once we get to the knock out stages.. it's all too safe at the moment...
^ Safe maybe, but dull too. The majority of games have been drab. I really struggle with Belgium at the moment. They are like England, but even worse - so frustrating to watch when they should be thrashing the 3 teams in their group.
Still very much at the bottom, but handed the wooden spoon to Slim ;D
Now, onto the 8th finals, we play Romania next Tuesday. Interesting..
Have to say I really enjoyed the Georgia Portugal game. Especially when Ronaldo got his yellow card for being such a baby.
Had a recent bad run but somehow hanging on to top spot. Enjoying the ride though!
No footy til Saturday now.. what are we going to do..???
I always enjoy the group stage most in the Euros or the World Cup.
Have to say the knock out part is the most enjoyable for me.. esp. extra time and pens...
I changed my 2-1 Switzerland win to a draw this morning. Feels like making coffee, always thinking I used the wrong amount, adding some and ending up with a heartburn.
Best game of the tournament so far. The Swiss were immense - it doesn't matter that Italy were poor, Switzerland made them look poor. I had a nagging feeling that Italy may scrape a draw, win on penalties and go to win the competition, playing poorly as they normally do. Thankfully Switzerland snuffed them out - what a team.
Italy were awful. I had Switzerland to win..
Pleased for Switzerland. The game of the tournament so far for me was the Georgia Portugal game. Loved the way they played so aggressive and without fear. Was a real breath of air especially after the tepid attempts by France and England
I had 2-0 for both games today, but .. of course I backed Italy to win. Got one of them right anyway.
Got the Germany game spot on...
My guess is that England will get their act together this evening. Two clear goals.
Need to wake up pretty quickly. Walker looking dopey
John Stones - that's poor
Poor for such a highly paid professional to go into an offside position from there. England looking better though
I was surprised to find that I was disappointed when England appeared to equalise, and pleased when it got ruled out. I suppose I'd just like our participation in this tournament, and Southgate's stint as England manager, to be over with.
We thought it was all over.....it isn't now! Goal of the tournament (so far)
Wow, where the fuck did THAT come from? Superb goal.

Huge improvement needed to beat even modest Switzerland
Quote from: dom on June 30, 2024, 07:43:38 PMHuge improvement needed to beat even modest Switzerland
They've looked a lot better than England in this tournament.
I love this Georgia team. They seem close to scoring every break they make. Spain, as always, trying to walk the ball into the goal.
Have refs just given up on all the shirt pulling, grabbing, shoving , holding etc that goes on in the penalty box for free kick and corners.. it's nonsense.. also do they now train for rolling along the ground after even the lamest of tackles.. the game is an absolute joke ..
The slamming their hand on the pitch to emphasize it really hurts is just cartoon like. Makes me chuckle. Cry babies.
I agree on all the above. Also when a player goes down the opposition are supposed to put the ball out for treatment. Erm no, as soon as the player gets any attention up he jumps - in fact he his putting his own team at a disadvantage by staying down. How many times has a player been truly hurt so badly that a pause in the game is required - not many?
There was a clear example of this with a Slovakian player who wasn't even tackled if I remember rightly. As soon as the ball eventually went dead up he jumped. I can imagine what goes through these player's minds. 'Oh I'm down, they'll put the ball out now'. 'Oh shit they are carrying on, I'll stay down and pretend I'm really injured'. 'Damn, damn they are still playing, I can't get up now or I'll look like a dick, sod my team, I'm more important'. 'At last the ball is out of play, best I get up and limp a bit to show how badly hurt I really was'. Bunch of wimps.
Yes and all the face holding and grimaces with tackles is just unbelievable.. it's all essentially cheating but seems to be acceptable somehow..
I need to reconsider France as a contendor. They are not if they keep playing like this.
Enough to get past Be and Ne(l) ! Shame no Luxembourg in the quarters😂
Dominating games but not able to hit the target. Perhaps the zorro mask is having an adverse effect.
One positive is the defence. De Bruyne and Lukaku only given one sniff at goal each today. And they say defences win tournaments. Spain look stronger overall at the moment though

Some comment on the BBCs wordplay "Misstiano Penaldo" ;D
Quite funny actually
Personally I really admire Ronaldo. I don't think he was/is as technically gifted as Messi (still incredibly gifted but not quite at Messi's level) but his pure dedication to the sport, ensuring that his physical fitness remained at a level to make the most of his abilities is laudable. To have maintained that level over 20+ years is quite exceptional.
He does come across as a bit of a prick at times but I think his positive characteristics outweigh that
EDIT: But his ego the size of a planet is pretty unpleasant
Keep changing my scores for todays games.. have settled on netherlands win and score draw Austria game.. I think..
Netherlands playing some great football and completely dominating the game. Only worry for them is that they should be 2 or 3 goals ahead by now.

I am quite impressed considering what we've seen so far... Bergwijn from the right wing position is quite good after he had a bad season.
Now score 2 more goals. Come on!
Ah, see? 2 more goals, that was a good and convincing win.
Interesting to see how unbalanced the 2 sides of the draw are.
The first set of Quarter finals which will decide who plays in the first semi final have teams that between them have won the Euros 9 times - Spain and Germany 3 times each, France twice and Portugal once.
That heavily outweighs the other side of the draw with the Netherlands the only team to have won it

😂 Still in with a shout for a second one too! Doubt they'll match Van Basten's winner from 88 though
Made the next lot all 1-1 draws...
Damn you Spain...
Is it not the score on 90 minutes?
EDIT: obviously not, I went for 2 1 and got full marks
I went for 2-1 as well, and 2-0 in the other one (France).
Anyway, England have made it to the last 6! That's a decent achievement.
Enjoyed the game although strikers still not able do very much.
Perfect penalties despite the inexperience of several of the French players.
Spain are the team of the tournament so France will need to start playing a lot better if they are to stand any chance.
Top of the guessing league as I speak. Will my luck hold out?
5 games to go.. 15 points up for grabs..
I've got England down to grind out an uncomfortable 1-0 this afternoon.
I've stuck with 1-1 both games..
England 1 - Switzerland - 1. Max points for me and England win on penalties. Perfect lol. Now the Dutch to win 3-1.
My son is at Lytham Festival tonight (Madness with support from Rick Astley, Lightning Seeds, Kid Kapichi). His girlfriend is a massive fan of Kid Kapichi which is why they chose this night. The Lightning Seeds played 3 Lions and then a break for the England game on a big screen. Now as much as I like football I'd be pretty pissed off with a near 3 hour break (extra time/penalties). People were not allowed out either, but a least all the food/beer tents were there - a loooong concert, but at least it's not raining like it was for me last year there.
Dutch team again making the same mistakes. Bad positioning, Memphis needs to go.
Come on boys, the Turks are not that good, they just run fast.
1-1 now. Strange that so many of these games seem to follow a similar pattern.
See you Wednesday ;D
Disappointed with such a timid looking French team and an out of sorts Mbappe. You can't really knock Deschamps' record but playing 3 holding midfielders is just too dull. Spain were such a contrast allowing a 16 year old to determine the match. Well played, the best team in the tournament deserved their win
Best game so far
This is the best England have played so far. Which means we'll probably lose. ;)

It was 'soft', as they say but it was clearly a dangerous challenge. About time we had some luck. England clearly outplayed the Netherlands in the first half. The second half was honours even IMHO. England have played one good half this tournament so luck may be our 12th player this time.

Labour say they are going for economic growth so if we win the final I expect Starmer to declare Monday a national holiday :D
I was very pleased with the first half performance even though we lost it 1-0 in truth (it wasn't a penalty) but the Dutch seemed to do to us in the second half what we did to them in the first; they stifled us. Just one of those magic moments that clinched it.

That challenge on Kane would probably get a free kick at least 50% of the time anywhere else on the pitch. Ian Wright called it correctly, Gary Neville did not IMHO
Was never a challenge .. the Dutch bloke put his foot up to block..Kane followed thru and rolled about on the ground.. never a pen.... Holland were fkn awful apart from their great goal..

Of course it was a challenge. You can call it a 'block' if you wish but if you go studs up, waist high that close to an opponent it may be deemed foul play, dangerous and possibly career-ending (unless you are looking at it from a defenders perspective, of course!)
We know why that would rarely result in a penalty.......because most refs would bottle it.
'Reckless' is the key:
https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/40534763/var-review-harry-kane-penalty-england-netherlands-correct-call
It constantly amuses me when players make that stupid ball-shaped hand gesture to the referee to say: "but I got the ball". You also hear this often from studio pundits that should know better. 'Getting the ball' or 'going for the ball' have absolutely no value if a judgement is made by the ref that the action was 'reckless', ergo dangerous.
Harsh decision for the Dutch but understandable why it was given.
Deserved win for England even with the controversial penalty.
Spain will be a bit of a step up but England have been improving game on game. All that hysteria about poor form at the beginning of the tournament seems a little daft now and Spain will be concerned about having to face Southgate's team.
Personally I think Spain will just have the edge but it will be very close
Told the wife yesterday already last nights game will decide who will lose against Spain.
It was unfortunate for us, but that's the game. Happy to see us get so far with 3 out of 4 starting midfielders being injured and not even playing. This was a complete new midfield, they did alright.
Do think the VAR is an evil instrument, it takes away a lot of the spontaneity of the game but I guess it 'progress'.
Kane clattered into him recklessly and should probably have got a yellow.
Well he managed to get up and score the pen so what the fuck was he rolling around the ground for.. he knows how to cheat...

They are all
taught that
Similar to an overhead kick - when a player misses the ball and his foot is deviated by a player's head he doesn't get a penalty for the obstruction!
Just so much cheating going on whether it's folks like Kane with all their antics.. or all the pushing n shoving all over over the place.... holding shirts...stealing yards at free kicks/ throw ins...why bother with a ref.. they hardly enforce any rules.. waste of fkn time..
Spain haven't fallen for the score early trap set by England.
England looking very solid defensively. Must admit was delighted to see Kane get a booking. Undoubtedly a fine striker but a sneaky dirty one too. (No Arsenal bias at all in that sentence)
Yamal looking more like a 16 year old tonight
Given the ball away needlessly a few times but a solid half from England. Certainly not looking outclassed in any way.
Not sure what Southgate said at half time!
Looking increasingly like England have no more in them than 45 minutes. In lots of bother now
Woo-hoo!
Unlucky England, well done Spain. Best team in the tournament won it
Thank you Spain.
No question of getting a Bank Holiday I can't make use of now :)
Spain were better. But what a great feeling when Palmer put that goal away - lovely.
Managers need to study how Spain play, in minute detail, because they are beatable with the right tactics. If you just watch the Spanish players they swarm a player who is in a dangerous position and they go into the same positions all the time when in possession - it's just a matter of countering that - somehow. I'm offering my services to the FA when Southgate quits. I'll show 'em how it's done. Yay. Hey we got to the final again, I'm proud of the team and to be English.
Quote from: dom on July 14, 2024, 09:11:24 PMNot sure what Southgate said at half time!
Whatever it was, it was comprehensively superseded by whatever de la Fuente said.
Spain went from struggling to break England's lines in the first half to cutting through them almost at will from the outset of the second.
Spain had gears that no other team in the tournament had and, ultimately, Southgate was outsmarted by superior opposition - again. :-\
I see Southgate has gone.. shame I liked him as a person... Frank Lampard your time has come is what a lot of people are not saying lol

Yeah, I can't believe the rubbish I've had to listen to about him during the tournament. Two successive finals is a huge achievement. I'll be interested to hear what his players have to say about his departure.

Makes you wonder why Steve Clarke still has a job..

I think some would say his record flatters him in his ability to produce a good football team. I mean, they made the final of course but had an easy route and did not play well
:-\
Every England manager ends up being vilified as being rubbish in the end. There is no football manager in the world who wouldn't end up being considered incompetent in the job eventually.
Southgate does at least have a decent record. He won more knockout games in tournaments than every other England manager since 1966 combined, even if you take out the ones won on penalties.
It's the gesture politics that I regret most about his tenure.

Cheers Fishy, I'm in.
Joined, thanks. Didn't even have to use the setup code..?
Excellent and welcome
We are only 3 at the moment which is a fine number but there must be more out there.....
I've made my prediction but can't find between the wheels in pools it's says you have no outstanding invitations
Betweenthewheels all one word?
I'm in. :)
We are 5😁
I am on the rise :D
I'm not..
And the descent has set in immediately. I shoulnd't have said anything!
Still haven't had an exact result, but I was briefly top the other day nonetheless due to all my "Close" ones.
With 2 exact results I just avoided gettng hit over the head with the wooden spoon.
That spoon is mine thank you very much..
Have had no fewer than 15 'close' results and zero exact predictions - which is why I'm third. :-\
All my draw predictions have pretty much been wrong.. abysmal performance from me and a lot of my win predictions have been fkn draws..
Doing quite well in this, I've put very little thought into it, just putting 2 seconds thought into each prediction.
I am not surprised I a lowest, I missed R3 first 4 games.. -)
Finally got an exact result in the Uruguay vs Spain game - which was the 64th attempt!
Bollocks, I forgot to put some results in >:(
I should know this but it's a lazy Sunday afternoon - now it's the knock out rounds is it the score on 90 minutes that counts ?

Knockout stage rules
All remaining matches in the World Cup have the potential for extra time and penalties.
Predictions on Superbru include extra time.
For example, if a match is 0-0 at the end of normal time but then finishes 0-1 after extra time, players who predicted 0-1 will receive an Exact and players who predicted 0-0 will be considered wrong.
Penalty shootouts are not included on Superbru and ties that are decided by a penalty shootout will be considered to have resulted in a draw.
Therefore, only predict a draw for a knockout tie if you think the match will go to penalties.
When there's a tie that goes to penalties, only players that predicted a draw will receive points.
To be clear, if you predict South Africa to beat Canada 2-0 but the tie ends 1-1 after extra time, you will not receive any points, even if South Africa win the shootout.
Perfect! Thanks!
FFS, I always fancied Canada to narrowly beat South Africa but had forgotten to submit a prediction. Doh! :'(
Didn't make any selections for yesterday's games

It was actually only the Switzerland Algeria game in the end but I'll do my best not to repeat that 😁
No idea how I did it but I now have a wooden spoon AND a yellow cap. But I am still last ;D
I bow my head in defeat, I suck at predicting football games.
So I put Spain to win with 4-0 in the final. I can only hope.
Apparently I suck at this, it appears I am human after all.
