I saw Sea Power last night. This was the third time I'd seen the band in Birmingham in the last four years, and the third different venue. Birmingham Town Hall is a grand, spacious concert hall, renovated in the noughties. It's a very smart, elegant venue.
To be honest - I don't think they quite brought the magic last night. They played well. It was great to have Do You Like Rock Music? played in its entirety, an album experience and a gig at the same time. But - I thought the set sagged a bit in the middle. Just a couple too many drawn-out, moody outros. Interaction with the audience was minimal and there was something a little perfunctory about the whole performance.

I'm sure the venue sucked some of the energy out of the gig. Actually for such a distinguished concert hall, the sound wasn't great. I was amused to see how many different chord voicings Hamilton used to play the same three chord motif in No Lucifer, to no audible effect.

There was no encore, so to speak. More like two sets, punctuated by a very brief intermission. For sure Remember Me and Carrion lifted the atmosphere considerably but on the whole .. a little bit low key.

Sea Power again last night. An absolutely belting gig. The band were 100% committed, they seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit more than Birmingham three nights earlier, the Leadmill is for me a much, much more convivial venue for this sort of thing. We sang along, we waved our hands, we cheered loudly. I loved every minute. I actually had goosebumps during Canvey Island.
There was a bit more interaction with the crowd but more to the point, the whole thing felt more like a boisterous celebration of the rapport between band and audience, and a transcendent sharing of joy. And I'd only had half a lager.

One minor nitpick - Hamilton was either playing a wrong note in Fire Escape in the Sea up the dusty end of his short scale bass or it was out of tune, or badly intonated. It was about a semitone sharp. I admit I winced, but it didn't spoil the fun.
Scott helped himself to a guitar solo for his birthday in Remember Me.

Front row of sage was unobtainable because, even though they showed on their site, they were only available via ticketmaster as platinum tickets for £100. I got third row. That'll do.
It's a fantastic venue...I was disappointed that the previously announced gigs there in 2020 and 2021 (for which I did have front row) were rescheduled to the city hall...although that gig was sensational, but still...

Yes indeed. They did a good job of warming the crowd up.
Bought tickets to see Mica Paris later in the year. Not having seen her sing for decades, I'm starting to think it might have been a mistake unfortunately. She was great, really properly great. But this is terrible.
Loved her debut back in the day...'so good' indeed.

I've just found out about this. A bit far to me, but I'm tempted - especially the Friday. Friday 12th July & Saturday 13th July.

Went to the very first in 2021 as it's only a few miles away. Headliners were Bravado. However, that was the only one that featured a Rush tribute which is a shame. The guy that organises it is a massive Rush fan and they do a great job raising money for glioblastoma research. For that reason it should be a regular on my gig calendar but I do struggle a bit with listening to Prog that I'm not familiar with. If you don't, it's well worth checking out. The Northcourt is a cracking little venue, Moving Pictures are playing there this Saturday. Normally a good beer on too!

This was last night at the Jam House in Birmingham. We'd been there once before to see Mamas Gun but it was packed out last night. Despite my expectations she was really good. Lots of geeing up the audience, she's a natural frontperson and she really belted them out.
She has a lot of original material to choose from; despite this her set was at least 50% covers. Fantastic versions of Tom Browne's
Funkin' For Jamaica and Jacko's
Remember The Time especially.
Her band is good, not great. Talented guitar player but more a heavy blues player than jazz or soul. A bit more restraint and subtlety would have gone a long way, probably true for Mica's vocals as well but there's no doubt it was a hugely spirited performance.

I paid £499.95 for 2 for the night before Nick is going. Ridiculous, but gig prices are these days. Justified as I'm taking my brother for his 60th and I'm crashing at his house, so at least it saves on hotel costs..

Riverside were simply stunning in Birmingham last night. They weren't too bad in Norwich on Sunday, but last night was special. Gone was Polish Melancholy and in its place full on Powerful, Pogoing Metal, maybe a slight exaggeration, but not far off it. Mikal Lapaj must be the happiest man in ROCK, never looks like he's not enjoying himself.
I think an enthusiastic audience helps, I don't normally like whooping hollerers, but the bloke next to me really got Riverside going. He was ENTHUSIASTIC, made Captain Ron look like a wallflower. He also thought that I must be a Rock Star, because of my deportment :)
And how could I forget, trains willing I do it again three times next week :)

Just back from the Masters of Reality gig. Chris Goss injured himself a couple of days ago so he to sit.
Show itself was good, kicking off with the Blue Garden is a winner of course. He had Alain Johannes in guitar so they played Hanging Tree. Lots of MoR classics passed by, mostly from the debut.
My favourite song of theirs they did as well: Third Man on the Moon, brilliant, that made my evening :)
Back from the second half of my Riverside tour. How good was that.
The London show at Koko was fantastic, bit louder and more bassy than the previous two I saw and the audience were up for it, surprising for a London crowd - then again most people weren't from London, bloke next to me had come down from Sheffield.
Bristol on Monday maybe not quite as good, but the audience weren't quite as up for it, but Riverside were still on top form.
I think they saved the best until last though, luckily that was the show Mrs S got to see. Mikal was completely up for it, the guy is bonkers. I forgot to ask Mariusz when I net him and Mikal if he as just as happy off-stage or whether he strangled puppies. Not only were the band on top form but was also got an extra song in Left Out real icing on the cake.
The only downside is that going to see Riverside seems to lessen my misanthropic sociopathy and I'll voluntarily chat to people. Talked to a Dutch guy at Bristol Station who's seen Riverside 66 times, makes my 16 look weedy. Talking to a lady from Finland too who'd been at Bristol and was on the train to Manchester and I met the French lady who I saw at the three shows I did last year, even gave her a hug and mwa-mwahed, which is not me at all.
Still think it funny that I'm now recognised by the band, but Ali of this here parish - nice to see you again - said I was easy to spot, must be because I'm the devastatingly handsome, tall, slim, silver fox of a man.

So, then, Richard Marx at the Royal Albert Hall - two firsts for me.
The first thing to note of course is that this iconic arena is every bit as grand as it appears on the telly, so I really enjoyed drinking it all in (with the help of some Stella ;) ) for a good few minutes before showtime, especially as all five tiers of the place were almost fully occupied.
I had a fairly central 7th row seat, which was obviously great for the view, but to my initial shock and surprise turned out not to be so great for the sound, which was too tinny for my liking and suffered from far too much reverb. I seemed to be in a sort of "non-sweet spot", beneath the house PA and too far from the on-stage amps. So the disappointing sound defied my high expectations, but the more Marx played through a tremendously well chosen two-hour set-list, abetted by three classy band mates on guitar, bass and drums, the less it was of an issue.
Yes, all the 80s US number 1 smash hits were present and correct, albeit re-imagined with other songs from the era to various extents to sound more contemporary and, by necessity, dropped down a key or so - Marx is 60 now and has lived most of his life without that hot-brushed mullet, soaring vocal range and chorus pedal-drenched sound of the early years...glorious as all that was. :)
But he still has that melodic voice - it still cracks impressively into a slightly gravelly RAWK tone in the higher registers and still retains a mellifluously smooth croon during the slow numbers: Right Here Waiting, of course the ultimate smooch song that alone will handsomely fund his retirement, is the obvious show closer and he performs it beautifully, both on piano and vocally.
It was worth the wait - and at £75.00 for a prime view, I suspect a hell of a lot better value than for certain other rock veterans playing the famous old hall this year.

For the first time in my life I actually got round to seeing Yes live.
Now, I thought they would be maybe at best, but I was pleasantly surprised. Steve Howe leads them very well and Machine Messiah was a very good start to the first set and Turn of the Century an excellent conclusion to the first set.
Second set highlight was the 20 minute condensed Tales from Topographic Oceans which Mrs S claims never to have heard before. Mrs S enjoyed the whole show more than me.

Wanted to check Marilyn Manson tickets, haven't seen him yet and I like his last albums a lot. But there is no way I am paying 73 euro's for a ticket in a venue that normally is under 50 easily. So be it. It is becoming ridiculous, they are raising the VAT on tickets again to 21% over here which will make it even less accessible to people.

Sea Power at the Craufurd Arms, Milton Keynes, last night.
The opening act was Mark Radcliffe's experimental electronic duo, UNE. Mark had some entertaining between-tune banter, although he was unnecessarily sweary. I've enjoyed his work as a broadcaster for many years. But I don't think I'll be acquiring any UNE records.

Sea Power seemed a little bit rusty for the first half hour - I think you'd expect that from a warm up gig. Bass player Hamilton hit a couple of bum notes and misplaced a guitar chord during one of his own tunes. Actually that's not uncommon. Lead guitar player Noble was on fantastic form. But overall the band took longer than usual to warm up.

Every Sea Power gig has a Hamilton section, in which the bass player swaps his Fender Mustang four-string for a six-string semi to strum chords and sing a few of his own tunes. He's a very capable rhythm player but he struggles to sing in tune. More than worth it for three or four of his songs which are often gig highlights, but for me anyway his stint was a bit overlong last night.

Massive changes to the setlist from February. Happy to see deeper cuts like Zeus, Come Wander With Me and The Scottish Wildlife Experience get a run out. I hadn't ever seen them do any of those ones before. And especially pleased to hear one of my favourite BSP crowd pleasers, The Spirit of St Louis in the encore. In the end it was a belting gig.
Not booked yet, but I see Vandenberg is playing near to me next May. I do fancy that.

Adje and his band of Merry Men. I do hope he's not pulling the Whitesnake cover act all night for you. The US shows were over 50% Coverdale material. Europe is usually a bit more his own. Still a great guitar player, and Mats Leven is a great singer.

Saw La Villa Strangiato at The Northcourt in Abingdon last night. Turned out to be a frustrating night for the band who struggled to combat sound/technical issues.
However, another great night appreciating fabulous players presenting some deep cuts from mid-period Rush. P/G featured heavily, including Red Lenses! (alas, no Kid Gloves :( )
Enjoyed by a modest but spirited crowd, clearly sympathetic to the issues that hampered the guys on stage. After the break things improved greatly (FOH at least). A lesson in the complexities involved in trying to produce Rush music live!
Special mention for a great version of Mission.

The last few days of May!
Back from the most expensively ticketed gig of my life - David Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall.
Was it worth it? Probably, he may never tour again and it's worth it for that guitar work. Had a decent seat in row 8 in the Arena which got better after the interval as the bloke in front of me didn't come back! Like most of the people there I think he was from foreign parts and probably didn't understand the concept of an interval :)
I'd read many grumbles about the show before going - too front loaded, too back loaded, not enough Floyd, too much Floyd, too much of his daughter, too much of his wife, too many drunks, too many beach balls - well I can say as a professional moaner (ask Mrs S) I couldn't find fault. Yes, I'd prefer some songs to others, but it's not my show. As I say, it's worth it for the guitar.
The only grumble I had was all the people who ran down from the back of the Arena to try and get the the front for Comfortably Numb, which rendered the band invisible behind a curtain of raised mobiles >:(

Very enjoyable Steve Hackett gig at the Royal Albert Hall last night. First set = solo stuff, Second set = Mainly Lamb Lies down on Broadway then other Genesis stuff.
Got some special guests last night: Brother John put in an appearance, but he always does when I see him since he lives in Sheffield and easily gets to Sheffield/Nottingham/Buxton. Then in Fly on a Windshield Steve Rothery came out to play (no Mrs S, it wasn't Bill Bailey) and then Ray Wilson sang Carpet Crawlers.
Unlike for David Gilmour there wasn't a constant stream of people going for a drink/piss. Probably because the audience was older and they just pissed in their incontinence pants...
Mamas Gun last night, at St Mary's Church in Shrewsbury. I'd never been to Shrewsbury before.
St Mary's was reclaimed for sensible purposes ("deconsecrated" is the term, I believe) in the '80s. It's not a great venue for a gig. It doesn't have indoor toilets (there was a queue for the portaloos outside) and it doesn't have a proper indoor bar. There was a sort of temporary drinks stand and that had a long queue as well. The pews at the back where we tolerated the support act were not especially comfortable. It was a bit cold in there as well.

Despite that it turned out to be a blinding gig. I've seen MG about six times now in the last ten years I think. They were on fire last night. At least three members of the band (bass, keyboard and guitar players, specifically) are proper virtuosos and the extended jazz blues jam that This Is The Day turned into was mesmerising. I was fascinated by the way they found their way back into the tune after about ten minutes of it. Amazing telepathy between them.
I was surprised by the size of the crowd. They have a huge following in the Far East and a decent following in London but I saw them play to about 40 people once in Birmingham (not an exaggeration). Last night's gig was sold out. I was also surprised to hear Dave Oliver, the keyboard player, chatting to the audience at one point. He was hilarious, he should do stand up. I've never known him to utter a word to the audience before. And he did a gobsmacking jazz piano solo in Strangers On A Street.
Oh and one of the encore tunes was Gil Scott-Heron's Lady Day and John Coltrane. They absolutely nailed it. Miles Davis once said that white men can't play rhythm guitar, he'd definitely have changed his mind last night.

## Trying to get out of chaperone duty
Saw Bug Club again last night, at the Soundhouse in Leicester. Last saw them two years ago.
It's a rubbish little venue really - small and dingy, and I nearly fainted from the smell of the men's toilets. But it was a great night. Hard to characterise them - they're something like a blend of a frantic garage band, a late '60s heavy blues band and Jonathan Richman. Love 'em.
Really impressed again with Tilly's bass playing last night - she's like a pocket Jack Bruce. Surprised to see Sam playing a Shergold Masquerader, one of the original '70s ones I think. I last saw one played live in 1977, and that was a school band. Mike Rutherford used to play a doubleneck version.

I have a Shergold Custom Double. Six string and bass, in natural. I was desperate for a double neck for the obvious reason. Sound Control in Jamaica St had the Holy Grail. A Rickenbacker 4080 in white. My memory is probably playing tricks but I believe the price was £1,200 then. It might as well have been the £12,000 plus that they command now. I did all my research and the only guitar I could find within budget or indeed to this spec at all was the Shergold.
There were no local stockists so with the help of some music mags and directory enquiries I phoned around the country. I even tried Manny's in New York who could do the 4080 at a great price due to the good exchange rate then, but unfortunately cheap flights didn't exist. Laker Airways' Skytrain had recently gone bust.
However, one really helpful music shop owner in the south gave me a phone number for Jack Golder, the owner of Shergold. I nervously called, expecting to be quickly rebuffed but he couldn't have been nicer. He explained that he had stopped making guitars, no money in it, and switched production to kitchen units. However, he offered to have a look around the workshop, have a think and call me back I didn't expect him to call back, but call back he did to tell me he had found a Custom Double body lying around and how would I like it to be finished? I can't honestly remember the price but it was very fair so I sent off a letter and cheque for £100 deposit (I think).
A few weeks later my guitar arrived by courier. It was stunning and I cherish it to this day. It really upset me that the letters were ruined in my damp garage while in storage but I still have an original B&W Shergold brochure. Jack Golder died not long afterwards as I remember. My double neck is in need of a little TLC which I shall organise soon. The original hard case was also ruined in the garage but I recently found a good quality gig bag for it from Thomann. Glad I spotted your post, James. Happy memories.

Thanks, James. I do still have your address in messages. I'd like you to post a picture of it but I'm slightly reluctant having just had a look at its tired appearance. I've always been very kind to anything I've ever owned, even going back to my days with toys. All my friends' stuff was always beaten up and scruffy looking, in a well used way, whilst mine were generally pristine and carefully put away. I've still got some having always possessed a bit of the hoarding gene. The Shergold is missing strings, has corroded bridges and a number of dings, exacerbated by the infamous Shergold finish crackling. Still, maybe I'll post it as a before image until I get round to the after TLC pic.
