Without wishing to step into a minefield - is this latest scandal, in which a BBC presenter, as yet unidentified, is said to have paid a 17 year old for naughty pics a bit of an overreaction?
I didn't understand why the police had been involved given that the age of consent is 16, but apparently taking pics makes all the difference.
I mean clearly it's embarrassing and distasteful, but headline news?
Nicky Campbell and Jeremy Vine have both been in touch with their lawyers after being falsely implicated in this by a malicious anonymous Twitter account - apparently the same one - and someone will be forking out a large sum of money, I suspect.
Don't drink and tweet.
Beggars belief that, whoever the culprit is, they'd think they wouldn't get caught out.
Hope those that are falsely accusing on Twitter or wherever get prison terms.

The fact that his livelihood is funded by the licence payer is significant
I'm going off on a bit of a tangent here, and it's not something I care about - I just think it's an interesting double standard in the law.
Let's say you're 24, but your girlfriend is 17. You can fondle and look at your girlfriend's naughty bits as closely and as often as you like as long as she's OK with it, but if you take a pic, just as a personal and private memento, you've committed a serious crime. Is that reasonable?

Perhaps, because you can never be assured that it will remain a personal and private memento (?)

There was a lawyer on the radio talking about this and it may be that people might be creating an assumption of guilt.. if enough come out and say it's not me then by nature people will start to look at those who haven't said anything and start jumping to conclusions by the very fact they have said nothing.. worlds gone mad .. bloody social media.
Some relief for Schofield (this time not of the sexual variety)
I've taken my best guess. I suspect it won't be long before I know whether it was a good one!
The builder working at my house at the minute showed me the bottom of the alleged perpetrator this afternoon. Mad.
Surely by process of elimination one could likely work out who it is as there are so many saying "it isn't me". I mentioned a name to my wife when we first heard about this and nothing heard from them so far. Can we run a sweepstake? ;D
This story has taken a real turn for the bizarre, with the supposed victim's lawyer claiming that the allegations are untrue:
"For the avoidance of doubt, nothing inappropriate or unlawful has taken place between our client and the BBC personality and the allegations reported in the Sun newspaper are rubbish"

Honest as the days are long - crackheads ;D
The satirical website News Thump has an article that is surely an instant classic:
"Tabloid that paid a 16-year-old girl to quit school and pose for topless photos remains straight-faced while trying to expose BBC presenter who paid a 17-year-old for photos
The Sun newspaper today remains entirely straightfaced, despite a long and distinguished career spent paying vast amounts of money to potentially vulnerable teenagers to take their clothes off and be photographed".
Did The Sun ever do topless shots of anyone under 18?
Oh yes, they did!
To be fair I don't think tits count, I assume not anyway. It's a law that surely needs the application of a bit of common sense.
This is beginning to look like it could backfire badly on The Sun and Murdoch.
He was probably rubbing his hands with glee with a chance to embarrass The BBC.

I remember the day this was published. I was at college and someone had bought a copy. It was passed around the class (all males, by the way) and almost to a man there was sheer amazement at young Sam's chest doing a fine impression of a dead heat in a Zeppelin race. Executed with parental approval, of course.
Actually, I was always a 'less is more' kind of bloke when it came to boobs. Give me the pertness of a Suzanne Mizzi any day of the week (RIP). Nowadays, anything ending above the elbow gets a second glance.
Surely if the "victim" is saying nothing happened that's unlawful ok maybe sent some naughty pics but not pressing charges then no case to answer..
Think The Sun newspaper is looking like the fool here

It is fascinating to watch this unroll. I know virtually no BBC presenters, I hardly watch TV in the first place, but I can imagine how this would go over (and has gone in recent months) in our country. With one big difference: the name. It would always be first, the rest would follow later. We have had TV personalities 'cancelled' for having outbursts to staff and sexual innuendos but I cannot recall any of this being related to minors. I am sure there will be, people are all the same after all, so statistically it'll come to pass anytime now.
It's just such a sad state of affairs, using your stature to gain something like this.

3000 emails revealed by the BBC, after an FOI request by journalist Andy Webb, show the extent to which they tried to cover for Martin Bashir's dishonest behaviour.
Just seen a short piece on BBC News about the film Poor Things and its multiple Oscar nominations, comprising of an interview with director Yorgos Lanthimos and lead actress/producer Emma Stone.
What should have been insightful and informative was amateurishly done; it was shockingly edited, with dumb OK! magazine-level questions (Stone simply burst out laughing at one of them) and the standard parting shot of "the best director category is still dominated by men".
To top it off there was a horrendous and unintentional crash cut back to the news host, although in fairness she wasn't sticking her middle finger up direct to camera at the time. ::)

But holocaust denial is only an occasional hobby, it seems her main interest is racism. She also posted onto her Facebook page that "white people are a parasitic, barbaric, deviant, murderous, genocidal and thieving race", and elsewhere she's described white folks as a "parasite invader subcontinental European caucasian invader species", and that it's time for us to "go back where we came from".
How does a person like this manage to get on with the white people she works with in her team?
Oh wait, it's the BBC - there might not be any.
Just a classic example of the sort of culture that the BBC cherishes and seeks to nurture. If the BBC were to be exposed to the market like every other broadcaster it would die quickly, and very good riddance. Our country would be a cleaner place.
She's gone. You do wonder how she got appointed in the first place but still...

I note that the BBC added a subtle hint of oblique whataboutery in their press release there:
"the corporation "does not tolerate anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, or any form of abuse"
I couldn't see the faintest hint of Islamophobia in any of her posts. I did see quite a bit of hating on white folks, but unsurprisingly the corporation isn't overly concerned with that.

Undoubtedly - the reverse is just as true
It can't be helped really. If you're standing at the far left of a room, say, everything is to your right, and vice versa.
I wonder if that's some sort of test of how politically balanced you are.
The more things you perceive to be left wing, the more right wing you are and vice versa.
The BBC is perhaps quite a good test in fact, as it appears those to the right perceive it to be left wing and those on the right to be left wing.
It's not a great test, because it's empirically left-wing.
Quite an interesting study here...

From the BBC sport website a few minutes ago. The BBC representing a success, in this case Switzerland topping the group, with an image of a black player. Well to be honest I don't think an arrest in itself should be enough to terminate someone's employment. It's a bit of a complicated story, I'm not sure he did retain the images he was sent, and he did specifically ask not to receive any illegal images when they were offered. I don't know that he actually asked for the ones that were sent to him. So I'm a bit confused about this but perhaps the details will come out after he's been sentenced.
Agree it's a bit of a mess but if someone sends you a pic like that why not go straight to police...? .. messages from a convicted paedo.. again report to the police....all very odd......A bit of a double life thing going on..

Just read the latest on this and it appears that the BBC's hardline action may be because this involved 'junior' staff members. So there would be a 'power' dynamic involved, I guess. Perhaps it comes under the description of workplace 'bullying' or 'grooming' (see: Philip Schofield, Huw Edwards and Bill Clinton).
A bit odd though that they should give him the boot in such haste when you consider Schofield (ITV, of course) and Edwards. When compared to perpetrators with a perversion, looks like double standards being applied by media bosses 🤔
Fully expect the mental health card to be played forthwith.......oh, it already has been 🙂
And according to the anti-woke agenda, the fact that he was black should have given him more protection than Huw Edwards, Schofield et al?

Greg Wallace. I think it's a bit rich for spiky-haired, pint-sized, croaky warbler Rod Stewart to complain about Wallace's behaviour towards his wife when he's been asking for years, "do ya think I'm sexy?".
Inappropriate, surely?
;D
The Wallace thing is just bizarre. He seems to have been a bit inappropriate and borderline creepy but how is it news? You'd think he'd sexually assaulted or harrassed someone.
Gregg Wallace is a Cockney Barrow Boy, how do people expect him to be behave but boorishly?

Thank you. The "ing" thing is a real fuse lighter for me. I have this overwhelmingly paranoid sense of those in power, in broadcasting and elsewhere, laughing at anyone with a shred of appreciation for traditional values. I wonder how it will all turn out.

I just don't see a problem there - who cares who narrated it, especially in the context of an ongoing genocide? The report actually says that "there is no evidence to support the suggestion that the narrator's father or family influenced the content of the programme in any way".
If it's misleading, fine but to be complaining about the identity of a relative of the narrator is ridiculous.

Apparently John Torode was sacked after singing along to Kanye West's Gold Digga at an after work gathering several years ago (it has an obvious rhyming couplet).
Context and nuance is everything and it seems the BBC hasn't realised this for a long time.
Here's a personal anecdote: a number of years ago a big, black, muscular ex-professional rugby league player was the landlord of a pub local to me. On karaoke one night he got up to "sing" that very same song, its lyrics unexpurgated on the screen as far as I remember (and yes it's more "rapped" than "sung").
He invited me up to join him, and while I was of course naturally hesitant to say the word, especially into a microphone for all to hear, he performed it as the song intended and didn't seem the slightest bit perturbed when I did the same.
So Torode's sacking strikes me as absurd.

If that is the reason, it is indeed, absurd. Problem is the BBC are running scared of the woke mob. It only takes one person to express offence over something like this and corporations cave. Who brought it to the Beeb's attention? I wouldn't be surprised if it was Greg Wallace!
......and if that was the reason for the BBC 'sacking' Torode, I'd have thougt that by appointing a good lawyer he could end up ensuring they end up with an egg-based delicacy on their face. A taxpayer-funded clown show.
So: I've been watching the last few episodes of Destination X, a reality show / contest presented by Rob Brydon. An American import, actually. Decent idea, I quite like it.
But on the final show I couldn't help noticing that the final three contestants, once the other contestants had been eliminated, were all black or asian. I had a nagging feeling that the BBC was up to its culture warfare tricks again. Pushing its notion of "diversity" down our throats. So I got an AI to help me with the sums.
12.5% of the UK adult population, from whom the contestants were drawn, are black or asian. So with 13 contestants, a representative number of black or asian contestants would be 2 (even that is rounding up, the maths says 1.625).
However as it happens, the BBC included 5 black or asian contestants.
The probability that 5 or more black or asian contestants would be included in a sample of 13 if drawn at random, without consideration to their ethnicity, is 0.018 or 1.8%.
And the probability that, all else being equal, the final three contestants would all be black or asian, is 0.00195, or less than one-fifth of 1%.
In other words if the BBC competition was fair, honest and representative: then 99.8% of the time, you'd have at least one white contestant in the final three.
So how's the BBC done this? Well the first part is easy, just pick five black or asian contestants to take part, fairness and statistics be damned.
How about the hard part, doing their best to make sure that a white person doesn't win? Well, the ethnic minority candidates taking part were conspicuously brighter than their white counterparts. The last three contestants were a pilot, a marketing executive and a nuclear engineer (the winner). The last two white contestants I saw go out were a semi-literate cabbie and an ex police sergeant. I would not put it past the BBC to give the black and asian contestants a bit of secretive behind-the-scenes help, either.
If that all sounds a bit far-fetched, have a think about that number on the bottom line.
0.195%.
The BBC is racist to its core.
Quote from: Slim on August 30, 2025, 04:19:39 PMThe BBC is racist to its core.
I'm not 100% sure on that. I think it's more of a box-ticking exercise.
The issue is that the BBC is terrified of offending minority groups, it is most terrified of upsetting from an Ethnic minority, more especially those of a sub-saharan background.
It might be worthwhile seeing if Scottish/Welsh/Irish appear in BBC programming at a higher level of their proportion of the population. Rob Brydon certainly pops up too much :)
There does appear to be some kind of overcompensation going on; it's almost as if there's a lower expectation of what ethnic minorities have the potential to achieve - and there's a word for that... ::)

Quote from: David L on August 31, 2025, 01:48:31 PMThe bosses at the Beeb are determined to present the world they wish to see IMHO.
I think this is exactly right, it's not just box-ticking. It's a sort of unending lecture: this is the world you're supposed to live in now, your own culture and identity be damned.
I think there must be a cabal of senior ethnic minority managers at the BBC who simply loathe white people, and their colleagues are too frightened - perhaps understandably in the current climate where you can be confronted by armed police officers for expressing the wrong sort of thoughts - of having the race card deployed against them.
The BBC has become a filthy stain on our national life.
Two grammatical errors in the same short piece. Three if you count NATO not being capitalised. The BBC was better than this once.

Radio 4 had Shami Chakrabarti and some lawyer on this morning discussing the Linehan tweets and arrest.
The latter mentioned Lucy Connelly, saying she crossed the line because, he said, she tweeted that hotels accommodating immigrants "should be burnt down"; but she didn't state that at all and it was disappointing that the BBC host interviewing didn't correct him on that, strongly suggesting she was as uninformed on that particular case as he was.
I'm going to conduct an experiment. My impression is that most times there's a thumbnail story on the front of the BBC news site with a random model, it's an ethnic minority. Yesterday - a piece about going back to school, indian girl. Today, this:
Of course (just so we're clear) there's nothing wrong with using a model from the ethnic minority community for this. I just want to see how many times, as a proportion, they do it.
There are as I type three other thumbnail pieces on the site with ethnic minority thumbnails but they are presenters so I'm not counting them. We'll just see what they do when they're free to choose any ethnicity for the model. I'll do this for a week. I will sample honestly.
To be fair to the BBC, just watch the adverts on Commercial TV. I'm surprised the advert for the Cotswold Company hasn't been banned as it's the only one with an all white cast.
^ True that, very, very few TV adverts don't have an ethnic minority in it.

I've just watched the first episode of Empire, a new series claiming to examine the history of the British Empire, written and presented by the "historian", if that's really what he is, David Olusoga.
You may have seen David in the BBC's very successful Celebrity Traitors programme. He came across as urbane and thoughtful, but his instincts and judgement proved to be wrong the whole way through. David's occasional Guardian columns are a lot like that.
If I were to issue a one word review of Empire, I think I might choose: excrement. In the whole of the first episode, an hour long no less, David somehow didn't get round to the defining features of the British Empire, namely the huge advantages that Britain bestowed upon the world: railways, the common law, banking, sanitation, medicine, irrigation, roads. Nope, none of that. Oh no. The whole wretched programme was classic BBC race-baiting; all about whitey making himself rich off the back of the poor black folks. I am so sick of the BBC endlessly wagging its finger at me for being white. I am tired of the unending left wing moral lecture that radiates daily from the nation's television sets, handsomely funded forever by coercion.
But I think Empire may be the single most BBC thing ever to exist. It is, in essence, a soap box atop which a black, left-wing Guardian columnist with a massive chip on his shoulder has been invited to do his best to make the licence payers ashamed of who they are.

I watched the second episode of Empire, written and presented by the left-wing pseudo-historian David Olusoga. I can't say I was surprised by what I saw having watched the first one - but - call me optimistic - in the spirit of fairness I wanted to see if Olusaga had, for this second instalment, perhaps engaged a measure of balance or objectivity.
Of course not.
The truth is: this programme does not even attempt to examine the British Empire in any meaningful or reasonable way. It might best be described as atrocity porn; an exercise in cherry-picking from historical episodes intended to show Britain and its Empire in the worst possible light. You see, the various voices represented here have been chosen to represent one side of an argument. You might think that, given the prominence of the word "British" in "British Empire" that a perspective close to home might get a look in. Inevitably, it doesn't. Actually I think a more honest title for this rubbish might be "Fuck You, Whitey".
Like many, including genuine historians like Niall Ferguson, I'm proud of the British Empire and its precious contribution to life on our planet. The civilisation, innovation and liberal values we exported have proved a priceless legacy for humankind.
And to be fair there might be a place for a programme such as Olusaga's, one-sided and distorted though it may be, provided it were to be presented honestly and openly as a left-wing anti-British opinion piece - and critically, provided it were to be balanced by a more rational, sensible presentation by a genuine historian.
But that sort of fairness and impartiality is utterly foreign to the BBC. Olusaga has a chip on his shoulder that a black hole would struggle to keep down. He loathes our country so much he can taste it, I have no doubt of that.
And that of course, is exactly why the BBC have given him his platform. I assume it's why he got the gig on Celebrity Traitors, as well. They must be so ashamed of that first 'B' in 'BBC'.
I watched the final instalment of the left-wing activist David Olusoga's Empire, his attempt to insult and discredit British history and culture in the BBC tradition.
This final instalment naturally covers the end of the Empire. I expected it to consist essentially of Olusoga gloating about it, and there is a bit of that though to be fair it's muted. But there's more atrocity porn. There's a bit of sneering contempt for Britain's partition of India. He doesn't actually suggest what his own solution might have been of course.
Nor does he acknowledge the obvious truth that the killings, displacements, arson, sexual violence and the rest that ensued were committed by the locals. These were the immediate consequence of independence. But these atrocities are framed here as though the fault of the Empire, the British - not the Indian communities that committed them.
There's also some romantic creationism about Windrush. No attempt to seriously represent the real, powerfully negative consequences of that.
Most seriously there's no recognition whatever of the Empire's legacy. He doesn't ask, for example, what might have become of Australia if it had never been colonised. No capital for the great infrastructure projects that built that country. No great cities or railways. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Auckland - none of the above would exist, or certainly not as we know them. Olusoga doesn't even allude to that. The British Empire was our planet's path to modernity. This is an obvious, manifest truth. But there's not so much of a hint of it here.
Generally - the contrast between his reverence for other cultures, and his contempt for British tradition and culture is striking.
Mr Olusoga is no historian. He's merely an angry little man with a chip on his shoulder; a grudge. I get the feeling that if he were to attempt, say, a history of the railways, he might find the descendants of a few ethnic minority people who'd died in industrial accidents, get them to tell us how awful rail travel is, and call it a day.
It's impossible of course to imagine that the BBC would broadcast a credible, serious examination of the British Empire.
He was a bit of a prick in Traitors. Will try to give the show a watch

AKA The Streisand Effect.
Another new low for the BBC as producers of Question Time felt it appropriate to include a couple of illegal immigrants in the audience tonight to put questions to the panel.
In what appeared to be an ambush of Reform UK's Zia Yusuf, one of them was given a platform to lecture the British public on why the UK should not leave the ECHR (read from a script, btw) and gave Fiona Bruce the opportunity to ask Yusuf whether he would deport the gentleman in question.
Apparently this guy has had an asylum claim rejected six times in other countries before finally being granted asylum in the UK.
Is there no level to which the BBC will stoop to stop Reform? Despicable behaviour by a publicly-funded broadcaster.
Fiona Bruce renders QT unwatchable right off the bat nowadays; a member of the audience gets to ask one question and off the back of it she asks at least a dozen of her own, often in groups of three or four after rudely interrupting a panel member in full flow.

We don't know the full facts around his dismissal or why the BBC made the decision they did. He may have informed them of circumstances related to a historical incident that would have resulted in negative publicity for the company. We must assume that the BBC had reasonable grounds otherwise they would be liable for wrongful dismissal.
