Anyone running one ? Had two pcs running esxi with 32 gb memory and another pc running xpenology as the shared storage... also had a pc with Windows 2019 server running veeam as the backup for all the vms..... now cut down to one host running vms with local ssd storage in an attempt to reduce electricity costs.. running a Cisco vWlc with 7 Cisco access points about the house/garage to supply Wi-Fi to every corner of the house/garden.. all connected with HP switches with various vlans... works pretty well I have to say...
Also a couple of raspberry Pis as a music server and Osmc video server...
I look after a lot of shared storage / hypervisor cluster systems at work, many of them installed at customer sites by myself but my stuff at home is a lot more simple. No shared storage or clustering. I have a couple of VMs running under KVM on a Linux host and two independent desktop PCs. Nothing fancy.
Been doing a bit of upgrading the last couple of weeks.. my two ESXi hosts now running ESXi v8 and vcenter also running v8.. got a problem with vmotion which is slow and just floods rest of the vms... dropped packets.. can't seem to get to the bottom of it all.. may roll back to vSphere 7 which worked with no problems..
Also upgraded veeam backup and replication to version 12...
Back to VSphere 7 and everything working as it should can vmotion a windows box in 30-40 secs compared to the 3-4 mins it was taking in VSphere 8...
Grabbed an Hp Elitedesk 800 g2 from eBay...can take up to 64gb memory.. as an upgrade to my existing hp elite 8300 ( only 32gb mem) so installed esxi8 onto an ssd no problem .. more compute power and works great in the homelab.....will need to grab another and buy in some more memory...... don't tell the mrs....
Another g2 grabbed from eBay and more memory.. it's all coming together nicely😀
And then falling apart.. PSoD on my Esxi host..memory allocation I think.. anyway reduced the memory down and appears ok for now.. running on local storage ...need to reconfigure the xpenology shared drive storage a bit then get the additional host up n running
Nice n easy upgrade on my pfsense firewall vm from 2.6 to 2.7.....
Beep errors on some new memory so back it goes...
New 16gb replacement now in place and working fine..still need another couple of 16s to get the host up to the same spec as the working one then will bring it into a new cluster ..
Also setup OpManager on a windows 2022 box to replace my aging solarwinds network monitoring.. easy to setup and looks good and has a nice app as well
Did a veeam patch before heading on hols to get it to latest version so it's now fully compatible with Esxi 8
Will get the last two memory modules when I get home. And may grab another hp elite desk off eBay to replace my shared storage PC as they are very very quiet devices

Grabbed another elitedesk 800g2 to upgrade my shared storage box..
Also grabbed an Aruba instant AP which I've heard good things about.. if you have a few around the house they can create their own mesh network.... Could be time to ditch my ciscos APs...
The Aruba instant AP arrived today.. a breeze to setup and the speeds with a device attached to it are very impressive .. will grab another couple and see how the mesh network hangs together and behaves.. looking very promising..
Also spun up a TrueNas box as an alternative shared storage box.. again looks good
Woke up to Alexa not working properly wifi goosed...... turns out a disk had died on one of my hosts.. it was really my dhcp box which was on that disk amongst other devices which was causing the problem..
Thank goodness for backups.. veeam instant recovery got the vm up n running and wifi back to normal... then migrated it over to one of my hosts...
The dead disk.. hit very hard with a hammer.. very satisfying..
Ok my two new Esxi hosts now up to latest patch release as is my vcenter.. moved disks around thanks to my failed disk so everything now running on ssd and shared storage on ssd and carved up into a couple of luns..... even created a nested Esxi host so as to check out future Esxi patches on that first.... Lovely ...job done at last.. it's only taken since March..
Next up try and find more Aruba IAP325s...
Grabbed another Aruba IAP325 from eBay..grabbed some newer firmware from the Aruba portal.. this wifi cluster seems to work rather well with impressive speeds..
Now up to three arubas with another on the way.. there's a guy on eBay selling them for £30.. absolute bargain... he's holding another for me which I'll grab after pay day next week...
Now up to 5 arubas and another on the way... one more should do it then it'll be bye bye to the virtual wlan controller and access points..

Deployed the new arubas.. working great..... think that's me pretty much done now with the hardware upgrades for this year.. this little setup should be good for quite a while...
Powered down the Cisco wireless controller VM. will hang onto it just in case but the Aruba IAPs are great.. also found a nice little hack from GitHub to increase the camera licences on synology (xpenology) surveillance station from the default 2 cameras.. now got all my cameras running off one device so another VMware powered down....
Installed Uptime Kuma onto a spare raspberry pi... an open source network monitoring tool..... just what I need.. a nice lightweight software that gives nice easy to read stats without the bloat... so I can get rid of a Windows VM that had been running Opmanager
Also did an upgrade on my pfsense VM which wiped out my radius server for some reason.. bit annoying but easy to fix...

An update to my Veeam backup platform to the latest release 12.1... all went smoothly with a couple of test backups which rattled along nicely.. my little windows 11 torrent box.. 40 gb backed up in 6 mins... that'll do...

A neat little app called DSLStats runs sweetly on a Raspberry pi3. It's to monitor a DSL connection - if you have one of course. I have that and my reverse proxy, Caddy v2 server, running on a pi3. That leaves my other pi, a 4b, to run my Airsonic music server.

Fish junior was looking to get a new lappy.. budget was £400.. told him to give me his existing one which was pretty decent.. hp pavilion win10 8gb.. intel i3...so I upgraded the os to win11 even tho the software said it wasn't compatible due to the processor but there's always a way round these type of things.. installed onto a bigger SSD disk and bought in additional 8gb mem for just over £20.. install of office 2016.. job done.. these little screws in laptops to get into the guts of them are a real pain tho
Back to raspberry pi.... Had a setup with one running OSMC connected to the big LG TV which allowed me to stream stuff from my local server where I dump TV programmes.. films etc.. it worked well but with apps around on the TV had a look to see if anything else could do the job and free up the pi...
Lg web os recently updated to v5.x.x so I wondered if Jellyfin was now supported.. maybe down to the age of the telly.. it's not that old but no Jellyfin app available.. so gave Plex app a go.... Bit of plex software on the server.. setup your libraries... ip add entered into the TV app and bingo... seems to work well so far...
So the spare raspberry pi 4 is now doing the internet speed monitor as the Debian vm which was doing it before was giving very weird results .. this one looks a lot more stable

Setup a windows 2022 server vm to run Veeam One which will monitor my virtual infrastructure.. will be interesting to see what it comes back with...
Due to switching my wifi over from Cisco to Aruba .. the Cisco vm has been powered down for a while which freed up a couple of dual nics in each of my Esxi hosts.. so put one host into maintenance mode and moved all running vms over to the other host allowing me to power of the host and remove the nic card.. power up the host and repeat the process for the other host nice n easy and no downtime on the live systems.. I love VMware...
Fired up a new machine running Blue Iris to run my four ip cams which currently work thru Synology Surveillance Station.. have to say blue iris is very very good although the numbers of tweaks you can make on the setup of cams such as recording / motion detection etc is mind boggling.. been checking some YouTube setup vids which last about an hour..

Powered off my veeam one vm server.. my VMware setup is pretty small so not that bothered about the occasional read/write redundancy error ....enterprise wide it might be useful..small homelab it's a bit of needless overkill.. also I think my setup is otherwise in pretty good shape..
I'm just reading through your posts again Fishy and I must have missed the Jellyfin one before. I've got a LG TV running WebOS and I have the Jellyfin client running fine on it. My TV is a C1 OLED from 2021. I've got the Jellyfin server running in a Docker container on one of my Synology NAS - and it sits behind a Reverse Proxy for remote access. I'd prefer to use Tailscale but it's a bit of a sod to install Tailscale on a Fire TV stick, which is all I, and the rest of my family, use for Jellyfin remote access. Works well.
I've dabbled with Plex in the past but I never really liked it (paying for clients and pushing their own stuff as well as lifetime passes to get the full benefit) whereas Jellyfin is totally free (it's a fork of Emby after Emby went behind a pay wall).
Oh yeah I eventually got round to putting Pi-hole on one of my Raspberry Pis - I only regret not doing it before. I may have too much blocked as I dumped a quite a few Adlists on it lol.
My lg telly is a nano I think.. it's now running webos 5.0.x something it did another update last week.. so I tried to hunt for the Jellyfin app but it's a no show... plex is working fine so it's all good...

As you're happy with Plex this may be a waste of time, but Jellyfin will run fine in a browser, which I'm sure WebOS 5.xx certainly will have. Anyway it's something to try if you ever wanted to give Jellyfin another bash.

Yeah Plex is working fine.. I just need it to stream from a local windows VMware server
which it does no problem.. not interested or need any of the bloat add ons you get with it..use Jellyfin from fire sticks which also just work...

Install Jellyfin on LG webOS Permanently
Yes you read the title right, It is possible to install Jellyfin permanently on a LG webOS smart TV and that too without rooting your TV.
Although I did make a guide nearly a year back, some new things have come to my attention that no longer require you to install a bulky IDE or have to extend developer mode every 50 hours.
Requirements
Access to a computer (Linux, Windows, Mac whatever)
A LG Developer account. (If you dont have one sign up here)
Setting Up the TV
On your WebOS TV go to the LG content store and download the Developer mode app. Open it up and Sign in.
Then 1) Enable Developer mode and restart your TV.
Upon restart open up developer mode and enable the Key Server. Make note of the TV's ip address and Paraphrase you will need this later.
Configuring it from your PC
Get the latest version of WebOS dev manager from webOS brew from here for your operating system and run it.
From the hand bar click on then add a device option.
When Prompted enter the IP address and paraphrase of TV and click add.
Once the connection has been made, select Available from the top bar and find Jelly fin and click on the install button.
There you go, Jelly fin is now installed.
Making the Install Permanent
The way developer mode works is that it checks LG's servers to see if the time has run out or not. You can extend this by making a call to API.
NOTE: The TV dos not need to be on for this to work.
Thankfull the webOS dev manager fetches the API key for us and all we have to do is call on it once before the 50 hours end. There are many ways to do this, bash scripts, home assistant and IF TTT.
I am going to be using a IF TTT applet. Click on this link and create a account. Then create a new applet setting. Make it daily and select any random time. For the "do" stuff select web hooks.
In WebOS dev manager open the info tab and click on renew automatically from there copy the url and paste it in IF TTT's web hook.
There you go. Now Developer mode will be extended indefinitely and Hopefully should work without a hitch.
The ifttt thing in the instructions above is no longer free but the lg web os application give u a shell script you can run to keep it enabled... once I got it to work using a cron job to schedule it.. I'm shit at Linux
Anyway appears to work so I think I'll be binning plex and using Jellyfin.. loads much quicker initially and less bloat to deal with
Been wanting to get rid of the power line adapters from my main switch out to the small Poe switch in the garage.. been working fine although it does lose. Connection occasionally and a power off/on usually sorts..so just bought an exterior cat 5e cable to run between the two..out thru an air brick along the wall to the garage and in.. has been allowed by the mrs..

A few years back I was using Powerline adapters but kept getting issues, so I bit the bullet and wired my house with Cat6. My router/BT socket is in the middle of my house so I had to run 2 feeds around the inside of my living room then out through an air brick, around the outside wall of my house then drilled 2 holes (one down and one upstairs) and fed the cables through those. I've got my own termination kit so did all the RJ45s myself. It made it easier with my CCTV system too which is in my loft as I just had a feed out and down through a soffit and through the hole in the wall to a switch. The only wifi devices I have are phones, alexas and internal cameras.
Wish I could terminate cables..I'm just useless at it...

Have you thought about Airsonic instead of Subsonic? Airsonic forked when Subsonic went closed source and remains FOSS. Airsonic itself became Airsonic-Advanced which is still being maintained by kagemoni (I mention this as there is yet another Airsonic-Advanced fork which stopped being maintained). I have it running on a Raspberry Pi4 behind a Caddy reverse proxy for remote access. App wise I use DSub on my Android phone - as you probably know there are quite a lot of apps that work with *sonic servers, but I like DSub as it runs with Android Auto in my car.

I need to find some domestic Linux projects to do to keep my hand in once I leave my job at the end of June. I've been typing ls, du, df, mv, tar etc for a living since January 1990.
Eventually found a snap install for subsonic and it was basically done in a few commands . the hard part was copying the stuff across from the windows box.. creating mount points.. smb stuff.. permissions etc.. nightmare stuff for me.. ChatGPT helped a lot..

Tried an airsonic snap install that worked fine but scanning media folder gives nothing back.. its setup same as my working Debian one so I can't figure out why it's not seeing any files.. very annoying and being shit at Linux doesn't help..
Ditched the Debian snap subsonic install and tried a conventional Ubuntu Java/ subsonic install and it worked no probs.. also moved my media box from windows/ air video to Ubuntu / Jellyfin media server.. all working well with a smaller footprint..
I think Ubuntu is my favourite Linux flavour at the mo but still got my raspberry pis doing pi hole dns and uptime kuma monitoring.. I know I'm only scratching the surface but getting to grips a bit more with Linux

^ Same here (I'm in a cottage in the Cotswolds). Airsonic is working well as is Jellyfin - we are watching the TV Show: Interview with a Vampire from my home server (I took a Firestick with me, but the TV in the cottage is an LG so I could have out Jellyfin on that). The broadband here is crap though, 11 mbps, but it steams 1080p just fine. I'm also trying Tailscale which is great too, but needs to be installed on the Host and Client - so it's on my music NAS and phone.
I'm also watching our house through a Hikvision CCTV system and a Blink doorbell camera. Also a few cheapy cameras secreted around the house inside.
I got Blueiris setup for my cams.. moved over from xpenology which worked ok but Blueiris has a ton more functionality..
Moved my media over to Linux mint and Jellyfin..
Moved my dhcp over to an Ubuntu Server box... think I've only got a couple of windows VMs left..
Moved my windows torrent box over to a Linux mint with qBitTorrent

I've just bought a little Mini PC. I've always had a 'main' computer in my house - something that sits on a desk with big monitors, speakers etc., that used to be used mainly for gaming. I don't game anymore, but it's still there for downloading stuff from usenet and I do all my finance stuff on it. So not much really. Not wife friendly either, so my missus is happy to see it go and replaced with something tiny.
Anyway I've bought this little Minix Z100-0db - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CPLQWN73?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details - I chose this one for 2 reasons: it's dead silent (no fans) so I can stick it in the living room under the TV; also the brand (Minix) - I have an Android box (Minix Neo X-8H Plus) that I bought in 2015 and is still going strong. It doesn't support UHD but apart from that works brilliantly with Kodi. So Minix is a well supported and trusted brand that I like.
Like I said I'll set it up and put it under the TV and access it through VNC or the like. It comes with Win 11 Pro, but I may put Proxmox on it and run some VMs/Docker for Jellyfin, SABnzbd, Airsonic etc. I might sack off my Raspberry Pis too and use this instead and possibly move the containers from one of my Synology NAS to it as well - decisions, decisions.

Yeah you certainly get more bang for you buck with Linux in terms of memory.. I'fe saved quite a bit on the windows vm boxes that were running various things that are now Linux..
So I've got this MiniPC all set up now. It's under the TV and connected to it, but I mainly access it headless. I messed around for ages with RealVNC, AnyDesk, NoMachine and whilst they work, they're not ideal for running video or trying to operate Word/Excel. I'd just about resigned myself to this limitation when I did a quick google for the fastest remote access. Of course I should have realised that Microsoft's own Remote Desktop Manager would be better. Luckily the Mini PC came with Win 11 Pro (which is needed for Remote Desktop) and was so easy to set up. It's that good it's like being on the PC locally - even 4K video is smooth.
I've now set up a parallel Jellyfin server on it and the N100 Alder Lake processor has a great iGPU that can transcode pretty much anything. It will even do 4K Dolby Vision to a remote client smoothly.
As it's fanless and the case is effectively a heatsink it gets hot, very hot. This is normal according to Minix but I'm not keen - though I could fry an egg on it sometime lol
So far I'm impressed; for a couple of hundred pounds.

I was even able to ssh as root onto a customer production server. Seven weeks after I left that job.

Another RPi added to my home set up. A Pi5 this time to go with the 3b+ and 4 I have already. These new RPi 5s are so much quicker than the older models. They also have a single lane PCIe 2.0 connector, so I've bunged on an M.2 hat for an NVMe SSD and it's fair whizzing along. They can even take a PCIe graphics card. Not sure what to do with it yet thoug - haha, but all in with the case/active fan/psu/M.2 hat/ssd was less than £100. And the fun is setting it all up and fiddling.
Thought I'd try my dhcp on server 2022 core.. fairly easy and working well.. Will hang onto my Linux dhcp box just in case which was fine as well tbh..

Updated my ESXi boxes and vcsa to latest firmwares..and also the Aruba Instant Internet access points.. all nice n easy
Moved my ESXi hosts onto hp elitedesk 800 g5s. also got the intel amt Remote Desktop working on them as well with mesh commander giving me access without the hassle of connecting up a screen when I need console access..
Grabbed a 10gb Nic from eBay..going to see if it works on ESXi and xpenology shared storage box..

I've just binned off the crappy Smart Hub 2 router from BT and replaced it with a TP-Link model. I can at last get pi-hole going again to stop all those annoying ads everywhere.
So my 2 hosts and storage all directly connected at 10gb.. also got my veeam backup directly connected to the storage at 10gb.. all super fast now .. and allowed me to clear out a lot of cabling which was going into the switch... got a spare pc which I've setup as a veeam replication box running Esxi with local storage just in case complete disaster strikes so all bases covered..

Interesting the read outs I'm getting on download speeds for virgin's supposed 500 Mbps download .. probably getting about 80% of the time on 540.. the rest of the time varies from 100 to 250 to 300..

I've got it set up too. I tried it first on one of my pis but I found out I'd installed 32 bit Raspbian and there is no 32 bit version of Speedtest-tracker. So, I had to put it on Container Manager on one of my NASs instead. I've got it set to run at 0300 once a day. This was last:

So you have Virgin 500 Mbps and getting 160 Mbps? At this time of night it's probably a high contention ratio where you are and quite normal. If everyone on your shared connection (let's face it no one gets that speed exclusively) ran a speed test at the same time it would be very, very low. It's why I chose mine to run in the early hours. In saying that after I'd set up Speedtest-tracker yesterday I was getting a consistent 920 Mbps dl with several runs - but I'm an early adopter of fttp here, no one else around me has bothered - which is nice 8) When I first got fttc I was getting the full 80/20, by the time I'd left I was on about 65/20 with all the crosstalk.

Built my own bare metal pfsense with a 10gb card..
retiring my Asus router which has been a stalwart for the last 10-15 years in place of the pfsense which is flying.. thought i'd try setting up wireguard on it for full tunnel vpn back to the house... openvpn took about 10 mins.. wireguard took me about a day and half...... was worth it tho....
Just setup my pfsense box with nordvpn.. now got my torrent box running thru the openvpn connection.. nice..
Ditched nordvpn.. got a refund.. grabbed PIA.. half the price....

I've been installing, configuring and tweaking the Arr suite of apps for the last couple of weeks. I've been using Usenet for a long time but have always managed everything manually. However the only indexer I was using (since 2012) went down for a site rebuild, and the fact I've only been using one provider, made me think I need some contingency in my set up. I've been using my current system like this since 2008 and I really needed to change how I was dealing with all this. So after scrounging invites to a couple of decent indexers on Reddit, and along with my current top-tier indexer, I also added a block account provider (from another backbone to my current provider) to compliment my main one. Okay, armed with what I need it was time to automate with the Arrs. I'd dabbled with Couchpotato, Sickbeard, Sickrage and some others in the past and had a rough idea what to do but the current systems are based around the Arrs (and much more advanced and user-friendly than the aforementioned apps) and are all very similar in their operation. This is all for Usenet btw, I stopped using Torrents when Nzbs became popular but these Arr apps do work with Bittorrent too if that's your bag.
So I started with Sonarr for TV shows (which is probably the most complex of the suite) - once I got this going I thought the rest should follow on easily. I was going to containerise but as I have a mini PC running 24/7 I installed to bare metal on Windows 11 Pro instead (I may still use Docker in the future though). These apps have come a long way in their useability and getting going was quite straightforward. I did struggle a bit with Release Profiles and Custom Formats but after some initial issues I tried my set up against one currently airing show (actually Married at First Sight Australia which is almost a daily release) and I managed to get the automation running well. There are some helpful guides in the Arr wikis and Trash guides which helped a lot. I then started to bring shows in one at a time and after a week or so I had everything running smoothly - of course I'm checking and tweaking all the time but I think I have it now. Next was Radarr for movies which was relatively simple after configuring Sonar and had it up and running quite quickly - of course quite a few tweaks to get it fully automated. After that was Lidarr - Usenet isn't the best for music but Lidarr is, at least, a good repository as a reminder and calendar for future releases. Interestingly, there is a python app called Soularr that integrates Lidarr with Soulseek (Slskd only) and I might look into that in the future. Once those 3 were done and working, next was Prowlarr. This one is an Indexer manager. So instead of having to add indexers to Sonarr, Radarr and Lidarr each time, Prowlarr contains the indexers and links to those 3 Arr apps with their APIs - very clever.
So that's it for now. There are other Arr programs e.g. Tdarr (automatic transcoding of media), Bazarr (subtitles) Readarr (books), Whisparr (Pr0n) Mylar3 (Comics), NzbHydra2 (similar to Prowlarr), Overseerr and Ombi (user requesting), NZB360 (a control app for phones) and many more: https://locatarr.github.io/. Dug out my old Acer Cloudbook - a lightweight little laptop with SSD. Still works really well with Linux Mint and I've installed the latest version. It's about 8 years old I think but still snappy. Might take it on holiday.

Upgraded my pfsense firewall to the latest firmware v 2.8.0
Tried promox but importing my windows vm devices never worked.. back to VMware then..
Tried xcp ng.. was an utter pain to migrate from Esxi so VMware it is..
Ok persevered again with xcp ng and have now got a system in place to export from vmware to this..
so what i do is
clone the vm.. then power up and remove vmware tools then power down
then take a snapshot of this vm
ON the xcp ng side on the XOA device use the import feature to connect to your esxi host.. easy enought o find the vm your after go thru the options about where to store it etc then click on import
On my test box a 40Gb VM would import in about 5-6 minutes
On a windows vm you then had to run a couple of commands to Set VM to use BIOS instead of UEFI: and then Disable Secure Boot (remove secureboot=true if it's present):
After that power up the vm.. and once powered up you then install the vmware tools equivalent which is XenServer tools
HAve tried this on about 5 vms and it appears to work
For Linux well debian in my case its more straightforward..still do the clone and snapshot part but no need for uefi nonsense and its a commnd line to get the tools installed onto this..
Think i'll be sticking with this as Broadcom have turned into complete bastards as far as vmware software is concerned.. still figuring out the vlans and networking side of things on xcp ng but yeah looks good so far after some hair tearing out..
Ok and now fully over to xcp ng on local ssd storage on one host.. other host now shut down that was VMware.. will let the new one bed in for a bit before committing the other to xcp ng
Will try the new host on a connection to shared storage on my truenas box next I think..
XCP ng is working out very well... built the xen orchestra (the equivalent of vcenter) from source tried some backups to my existing windows backup box.. all working great with a dedicated interface/nic for the backups.. the connection to shared storage on TrueNAS was easy and speeds over the 10gb nic was great.. all in all its very good.. so i think its bye bye vmware...
Chucked a 2.5 gb Nic into my pfsense box .. noticed the 10gb card wasn't auto negotiating with the virgin router to 2.5 but to a 1gb.. the 10gb card doesn't know about2.5..... tried a star tech but it used horrible Realtek chipset which pfsense doesn't ship with.. got it to kinda work but got dump crashes etc so it got sent back.. picked up an intel v226 which worked straight out the box. and was cheaper. so far so good and seeing my wan port now at2.5...
Moved my other host onto xcp ng... reckon I don't need my truenas for shared storage.. happy to use local ssd.. the other host is now setup as a backup and replication so if main host dies .. the other takes over .. nice to simplify things a bit

I've always held off getting an e reader, but when I fancied reading The Murderbot Diaries, and they were so expensive in print, I eventually bit the bullet and bought one. I ruled out the obvious choice, Kindle, straight away to avoid being locked into Amazon universe and that really left Boox, Pocketbook or Kobo. After a little research I settled on a Kobo Libra Colour and a neat little device it is too - I've put about 150 books on already and the device has 32GB memory. Of course having an e reader opens a whole new world of book library organisation, conversion and sync.
I started with the most popular choice, which is Calibre and I installed bare metal on my laptop and syncing through a USB connection to the Kobo. Obviously someone has created a web server and so I then moved on to Calibre-Web which again I ran on my laptop. Then I discovered Calibre-Web-Automated - a further enhancement which adds loads of new automatic features to Calibre. CWA only runs in Docker though, so I span up a new container on my NAS and created a new book library. Of course USB sync is no longer supported from a NAS so it requires generation of an API in CWA which is added to sync destination on the Kobo. This allows syncing, conversion and organisation all over a network. I've put the CWA server behind a reverse proxy so I can access my library remotely. All great fun and I've still a fair bit to learn about book management. I even managed to add my book library to Jellyfin, but it's not really useable; and there are other web server alternatives to Calibre-Web which have been written from the ground up without relying on a base system that is Calibre. So I'll start trying these in the near future too: Komga, Kavita, Audiobookshelf, Booklore, Ubooquity. But for now CWA is working well.
Have been flip flopping between xcp ng and VMware.. went over to xcp then went back to VMware.. the last couple of days have settled back to xcp ng and imported all my vms across and sitting on local storage on one host.. veeam now have a public beta available for xcp ng which was my main hold off point as I find veeam really easy to use for backups and restores..will hold onto my other powered down host with ESXi and the associated vms as a disaster recovery should all else fail... but I think im pretty much in the xcp ng camp now
Just built a small windows 2025 vm server with the veeam public beta incorporating xcp ng and it appears to work very well...
Backed up all my xcp ng vms with veeam via a dedicated 10gb Nic and no problems at all.. tried a couple of restores of course and all is well..
I've been dropping hints to my wife that we need a new NAS. My recent knee op must have softened her somewhat as the other day she agreed to let me get one. So I've bought a new Synology DS425+ with 48TB. I plonked it next to my sofa and set it all up until my son came around Thursday night and physically installed it in an upstairs bedroom for me.
Oddly, something strange happened with my broadband connection yesterday in that it started to slow down. Of course my first thought was the new NAS, but a quick disconnect from my LAN proved it wasn't this at all. A bit of investigating and it turned out to be a combination of Pihole and Amazon Fire TV devices (2 sticks and a TV). Checking the Pihole logs showed massive amounts of geolocation telemetry connections coming from the Fires, and I mean tons a second - constantly, and these were overloading the Pihole, which in turn slowed down the internet on my LAN. It started at around 1am and eventually subsided late yesterday evening. All the TV sticks were in sleep mode as well but as soon as they were all powered down the broadband came back to normal. Turning off Pihole also made everything OK too. Very strange indeed. I can't seem to find out why these Amazon devices would do this, but I wonder if this is some sort of crackdown on dodgy fire TV devices (mine aren't btw).
I have pihole running with unbound and all my fire sticks and Alexasare on a separate vlan allowed to internet and can't touch my "trusted" LAN
Upgraded all my network switches from 1Gps to 2.5Gbps models - x1 8-port, x3 5-port and a USB dongle for my laptop. Actually my son had to come round and do it for me as I couldn't get on the floor due to my knee. Thankfully all my runs are Cat6 already so no updates needed there.

Of course Synology want you to use their memory which costs a crazy amount for just a 4Gb module. I just bought a used Lexar 8GB stick from ebay for £20 (following the RAM megathread on Reddit) - works fine.
Next, I popped in an 400GB NVMe drive mainly for running containers on, though it can also be used as cache if needed. Once more, Synology insist on using their own brand and this time I did get a Syno model, though there is a script frig, that some clever person came up with, to allow other makes; but knowing Synology that will likely get blocked in further s/w updates - so a risk I wasn't willing to make. I set it in Raid1 and I'll add another equivalent sometime in the future for full redundancy.

You ever tried building your own synology using xpenology.. I used it as shared storage for my Esxi boxes .. worked really well.. think the last one I used was building it with arcloader which was all menu driven to build your "synology" box of any flavour you liked really.. was pretty solid I have to say
^ I did consider it a while back, but I like Synology NAS. But this will probably be my last. Ugreen NAS have been getting better and better with their s/w improving; and the hardware is so, so much better than Synology.
Trying to keep things current can be a PITA sometimes. My x3 Raspberry Pis having been tootling along for a couple of years untended. A quick check and they are way out of date, so time to wipe and start again. Linux is great but things are always changing and some of my saved processes and guides are defunct so it's like learning all over again. I've just got one done and fully operational, took a couple of hours though. I've also decided to rationalise and drop to 2 Pis. I'll bin off the oldest - a Pi3b+ and put all my stuff on the other 2 - a 4 and a 5. Of course I could shift some of this stuff to my NAS'/Docker, but I like to spread the work as it were and not put all my eggs in one basket :o Also it keeps my hand in with all things Linux.
I've grown to like Linux and all my Debian dockers running pihole / Immich/speedtest/ duckdns / Jellyfin/ air sonic and uptime kuma
Went back to VMware.. xcpng was fine but the ui was pretty tacky and I'm just used to VSphere.. it just works for me.. came across a nice docker management setup called dockhand.. very easy to setup and you can add in your remote ones.. looks hood and gives you a ton of details on each container ...
Ok so Dockhand now up and running and setup with pushover notifications.. upgraded veeam to v13 and VMware backups running very smoothly over the direct 10gb link..don't think I need a 10gb switch really.. also gave my small comms cabinet a cable clear out..setup a couple of DNS entries on my pihole for the vcsa and ESXi host which means the windows 2025 DC can be retired so have reduced quite nicely the bloat of my homelab down to one ESXi host running a dozen vms and a physical pc running veeam.... Still leaves me the host that was running xcp ng

1930 Aruba up n running nicely.. got some 10gb ports to play with so grabbed a mellonox sfp+ Nic from eBay then had fun flashing it.. then discovered Esxi 8 doesn't have drivers for it they dropped it after Esxi 7... but my windows veeam box can see it no problems.. I actually found another sfp+ hp branded card .. must have hung onto it from work...which does play nice with Esxi 8.. so grabbed a 1m dac cable to connect and it works..

I thought opnsense would be easy as it's a fork of pfsense.. similar in many ways but very different in others.. built a test box with what I thought was a basic replica of my pfsense.. wan got an ip but I couldn't ping out from a pc to say Google.... On chatting with ChatGPT it seems pfsense auto creates rules which opnsense doesn't.. particularly on natting which I never even thought to look at.. I suspect the problem lies there as all my inter vlan routing was working fine
Immich upgrade to v3
right after weeks of tinkering with an opnsense build its now gone live... it was the vpn bits that needed sorting and a couple of how to vids got it working for both wireguard and openvpn..... looks good and working fine.. speed is great .. would like to get it onto my g3 sff pc which had pfsense on it.. opnsense is on a g2 sff which is a bit bigger in size and slightly less spec ... so will let it run for a bit then maybe swap the disks over
Couldn't get intel Amt Remote Desktop working on the g3.. it was a cutdown version of it so stuck with the g2 for opnsense where I can get console access via AMT.. had a spare g2 so swapped processors with the g3 so it's now a slightly higher spec...also gave it an update along with my core Aruba switch.. working with ChatGPT to get my lab documented.. it wanted to do an enterprise ready 150 page doc.. I said I just want a nice picture
so was looking at a password manager and came across vaultwarden for docker... chatgpt suggested i use a reverse proxy (nginx) which id never used.... so have been immersed with that the last few days... now got it working and can now set domain names instead of ip add:port numbers.. move a few others things into the reverse proxy such as homer speedtest uptimekuma and dockhand..

I know you've got nginx working for a reverse proxy now, but believe me, Caddy v2 is so, so much simpler to use. It really is just a case of install and a simple one-liner to get it working. I looked at nginx, gulped, then moved over to Caddy.
I saw caddy.. is it cli to config.. ???it was more the certificate carry on that caused me grief.. ChatGPT helped with that
Caddy handles everything for you, it's like magic. Nothing extra with Certs and the like, Caddy handles all that. You just need a domain name, I get 4 free from Dynu so I use a very simple caddy file with the 4 instructions for each. Like this and then just start Caddy:

didnt know that but i like the idea of it being separate tbh... i might try caddy in a docker along side nginx and see how it goes...
So got caddy working.. only thin* that didn't was uptime kuma on my phone.. worked fine in browser but it just wouldn't connect.. could connect via ip: port number but not via uptime.home name... works fine in NPM

The power tripped in our house yesterday, which is a right PITA with all the network devices I have around. Bit the bullet and just ordered an APC UPS from Amazon - mainly to cover 3 of my Synology NAS. I also need some IEC C14 Plug to UK Sockets, so despite the UPS coming tomorrow the leads are coming 20th August - phookin' Amazon.

The APC UPS arrived and its all set up. It's all rather boring - it just sits there and does its thing. I only have 2 NAS connected so far as I'll have to wait for these other leads for the other bits and bobs. The Synology NAS are clever in that the one that's connected to the UPs acts as a UPS server in that it will gracefully shutdown the other client Syno NAS when required.
