Geddy might be scheduling a meeting with Alex's trichologist soon  ;)

Interesting, from the photo at the top Alex was obviously there at the time. Probably in their rehearsal space I think.

Ahh literally thirty seconds after I typed that, Alex appears in the frame.

The Alex interview will follow soon I suspect.

Great watch though, it starts of slightly hesitant, but as soon as Beato veers into territory he is known for, Geddy gets more excited I feel.
And Alex just lights up the room completely.

Interestingly Geddy claims that he had his Precision on the first tour in 1974, but "many years later" he had the idea to have it cut down to a teardrop shape. But you can see it in teardrop form on the All The World's a Stage cover photos, taken in the first half of 1976.

Love that bass because he played it on the first UK tour, but I never saw him play it again. So it's a sort of totem of the first UK tour, like their live performance of Best I Can and part of Necromancer.

2 minor nuisances:

Is it a 'thing' now for men over 70 to buy jeans that are too long and not have them tailored to actually fit (yes I know it is probably fashionable)?

and

Why is that Fender jazz bass such a hideous colour?

I've just started to like this bass. I hated how much he used it on the most recent appearances and wished he would stick with his more familiar No 1 Jazz, his most iconic look. Interestingly he mentioned the number of different basses he used during the R40 tour. I didn't like that either although he thinks he always manages to retain his signature sound no matter what he plays. Why change then?

But as he sat there chatting I did get a closer look at the Sea Foam colour and it is starting to grow on me. I have a Squier Precision in a similar finish. I think Geddy's is refinished.

I think why I now like it is because the camera was focused on it for so long during the interview. As it gently moved I could sometimes see the wear on what appeared to be an ebony fingerboard. Just little changes in the reflections of light which made it seem very lived-in.

I think it's an original 60s instrument which makes me wonder about its history. Was it someone's treasured pride and joy for decades, or did it pass through various players hands through the years?

I got the impression it was ebony, as well.

I had assumed that it was one of the (at a guess) dozen or so basses that the Fender custom shop made for him, the only question mark being the screw holes where a previous bridge seems to have been removed.

So I googled this

https://www.facebook.com/groups/rushlovers/posts/10159744426925189/

Geddy Lee's #1 bass used to be his 1972 Black Fender Jazz Bass with the white pick guard, as well as what looks like shiny quartz crystals embedded in it, along with the amalgamation symbol. For the longest time, it was that bass!

And now this 1962 Seafoam Green Fender Jazz Bass with the "stickman" logo embedded on that pick guard is his new #1 bass. When he filled in for Chris Squire to play "Roundabout" in the Yes show as per their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, this was the bass he used.

The author doesn't say where he sourced that information.

Maybe it isn't. It's this one! He says "when I saw this foam green refin for sale", so presumably it was that colour when he bought it. Page 72.

I've been lazy. I have this book. I have two actually, one still sealed. Couldn't resist them as Amazon was selling them at £15 in the early days for some reason. They're a bit buried at the moment but I'm keen to have a read now.

Yes, mine was in the £15 batch. I wouldn't have paid full price. I've only really skimmed through it.

Sorry guys, sort of related, but also not. However, I almost choked on my coffee, just too funny. I figured., let's look up what Amazon wants for the Bass book then (not that I in the market, just curious), and then stumbled onto this - but the icing is the review.

I saw a different one on Amazon. I read the sample. Just a ChatGPT summary.

The AI likeness is terrible, I'd have let them have the Geddy on a Chopper AI image if they'd asked.

so 18 songs are on the "have to play list" and Al reckoned they were doing about 20 every night... not a lot of room for other/rarer stuff really...

What? The photo looks like Julian Lennon morphed with someone else I can't put my finger on just yet. Must have a closer look at this and also check the price of the BBBofB.

I've only watched about ten minutes so far but I think Alex subliminally lets slip a couple of songs from the setlist. He drifted just too quickly into certain chords etc. I don't think he has quite the Geddy business, marketing cynicism.

Is the new drummer gettting an interview... ?

I always realise they'll always be my special, favourite band when they're interviewed. I could pretty much answer all the questions the interviewer asks myself, but I always watch or listen with a large degree of satisfaction. I like the part when Alex states that fans always think of a band as being their own. I relate to that. Everyone else is just trespassing really.

As much as I enjoyed these interviews, my YouTube algorithm directed me to Beato's 90-minute discussion with Rick Wakeman and I've watched half of that and enjoyed it even more - he's a natural raconteur and his anecdotes are terrific.  And the flashes of his ability on the piano are pretty mesmerising.

Both interviews were a fantastic watch. Very little that we'd not heard (in some form) before but both Geddy and Alex are so engaging that they easily hold one's attention for the duration. Great stuff!

That was a fantastic 20 minute watch. Geeking a little over what heads are on the drums, why she uses the Bubinga kit (hugely expensive African hardwood kits), tom sizes, tuning - really great. Now I have to go back and see if I got it right for the basic sizes  ;)  no mention of the bassdrumsize, but it looks a 22".

Edit: I got the basic tom sizes right :)
